BobLoblawParticipantWhile I’m all for throwing shoes at the Federal Building on January 20, as is being planned on Facebook and elsewhere in ‘honor’ of our outgoing president, I’m starting to think it’s a waste of shoes.
.
Any interest in a “shoe drive” that day instead? I’d be happy to load up the car with new children’s shoes and run them to a local charity in honor of our incoming president. If there’s enough interest my car club could come in handy for transporting the donations.
.
Any interest? Would need to know the best place to donate them, where to meet, etc.

inactiveMemberNice idea BobLoblaw –
Hadn’t heard about the shoe throw.
However, if you get the ball-rolling, count me in for a couple of pairs of shoes.

JoBParticipantI love this idea..
putting shoes into the hands of those who need them to move forward is a great way to immortalize this presidency…
anyone interested in combining this with a WSB Forum inauguration party since our holiday party got stalled?
December 30, 2008 at 11:32 pm #652579
GinaParticipantThat would be a great idea, MLK Monday the 19, or Sunday the 18th for the gathering of the shoes?
December 30, 2008 at 11:43 pm #652580
IrukandjiParticipantI’ve sent a note to Cause at See Kai Run kids shoes. The family is here in West Seattle. Her company donates LOTS of shoes to Westside Baby and other charities and I’m hoping she’ll put a note up on the forum with her insight into shoe donations and drives. Hooray for See Kai Run!

GenHillOneParticipantI put this on the HP mention as well, but I see 1/20 as Obama’s day and a fresh start. Seems to me if people are really devoted to making the statement against Bush, 1/19 makes more sense, but what do I know. I like the idea of keeping 1/20 positive and a shoe drive seems like a better way to honor the new era. The way feet grow around here, we have a few that hardly look as though they’ve left the shoebox!
December 31, 2008 at 1:27 am #652582
BobLoblawParticipantLove the idea of combining the party with a shoe drive, JoB. Again, my intent is to get past the “throw shoes at Bush” stuff (don’t care if folks still want to do that or not) and move ahead with something positive. There are lots of people young and old who need better shoes. Before simply driving by federal buildings and tossing shoes out the window, I thought of this instead.
.
Irukandji, hope to hear from Sea Kai Run here in the thread.
.
JoB: Was there a planned place for the inaguration party?
December 31, 2008 at 3:50 am #652583
shoemamaParticipantBobLoblaw, what a great idea! Like you said, there are so many people truly in need of shoes. I’m definitely behind a more positive statement.
I’m the founder of a children’s shoe company, See Kai Run, and we have been donating lots of shoes both locally and internationally over the years. As many of you probably know, Westside Baby is a great local resource for families. This year we donated as many children’s shoes (ages 0-3) that they thought they would need for the year. They work with over 95 social service agencies to distribute diapers, shoes, and clothing to kids in need. I am sure they could use some bigger kid’s shoes!
The other organization that we’ve donated thousands of pairs to is a fantastic group called Soles 4 Souls (www.soles4souls.org). Their sole mission is to collect unwanted shoes from individuals, retailers, and shoe manufacturers and put them on the feet of children and men and women who truly need them. There are 300 million children in the world, right now, who don’t own a single pair of shoes. And it’s not just an issue of comfort – many children have to walk miles every day and shoes offer protection against injury and disease. Every year, thousands of pairs of perfectly useable shoes end up in landfills!
Soles 4 Souls has drop off points around the city and I believe that Edie’s is one of them. Perhaps you could speak to the store owner to see if they would be willing to accept a rather large (hopefully) drop?
I have several pairs that I would love to contribute…

JoBParticipantBoblablaw..
we had originally planned to use the upstairs at big Al’s brewery in White Center.. but i don’t know how many people they hold…
i will get in touch with celeste who talked with them before and see if they would still be a good space…
the good news is that since they are a tasting room.. kids can be upstairs… and they will let us do pot luck.
i think we would be open to other options as well…
i too like the idea of doing something positive.

IrukandjiParticipantGreat info, Cause! I called Zappos: they do all their charity donations within the state of Nevada, so I wasn’t able to talk them out of any shoes. I did put in an order and will get Bob via PM for pick up.

FullTiltParticipantHey
We are hosting an inauguration party with MoveOn on the 20th. I would be happy to be a drop place for shoes.
December 31, 2008 at 5:35 am #652587
MagpieParticipantThis is really a “step in the right direction” Great idea!!
December 31, 2008 at 4:12 pm #652588
CaffeineQueenMemberYou are very welcome to use Hotwire as a drop off location for the shoes. I would be happy to help you plus I’m sure I could get some other business owners involved from around West Seattle. My email is lora@hotwirecoffee.com
December 31, 2008 at 4:17 pm #652589
JoBParticipantBobLoblaw
it looks like you have started something:)
perhaps it would be a good idea to get a google group going on this after the first so that there is a good place to trade info and to coordinate picking up and delivering all those shoes…
and i still think a party is a good idea though i turned down MoveOn’s request….
Full tilt.. are you partying at the store?
December 31, 2008 at 5:49 pm #652590
inactiveMemberMy $.02 –
Thinking about West Seattle shoe store locations and wondering whether approaching them for participation of some kind is a possible strategy? We want to strengthen all of our local economy and pulling these stores into the light might just help ’em out as well as the kids. Just throwing it out there, though I’ve never solicited donations or participation before, maybe someone else has the skills/knowledge:
Dante’s on California in the Admiral District
Edie’s on Alaska in the Junction (these are both boutique stores, however);
Payless Shoe Source in Westwood Village;
Famous Shoes in Westwood Village;
Cheers to positive, proactive neighbors!
Here’s looking forward to seeing Giant Strides being taken in 2009 and beyond!
December 31, 2008 at 6:27 pm #652591
mrhinehMemberEven if you have two or just a single shoe (one shoe, left or right), there are agencies that will collect them to serve disabled users. One is N.O.S.E., National Odd Shoe Exchange. While some users need two shoes for an prosthetic foot, there are many who can use just one due to injury, disease, genetic, etc.

cheers!
December 31, 2008 at 6:35 pm #652592
GenHillOneParticipantThat’s a great tip! We picked up a pair of nice hiking sandals in OR that turned out to be two different sizes (by two sizes!) and of course, they were worn once…and without noticing, pffft. I haven’t had the heart to toss them, but haven’t known what to do with them. Now I do, thanks!
December 31, 2008 at 6:44 pm #652593
angelescrestParticipantI wish I’d known about oddshoe. The pup has worked her way through many a sole-mate.
Throwing the shoes: Are only new shoes to be collected?
January 1, 2009 at 5:32 pm #652594
JoBParticipantBobLoblaw…
since you found the facebook site.. why not suggest they have someone collect the thrown shoes for donation?
and let’s see what we can make of this here. it looks like this has struck a cord in west seattle.
January 2, 2009 at 7:02 pm #652595
JoBParticipantbump
January 4, 2009 at 6:26 pm #652596
BobLoblawParticipantGood idea JoB.
.
All: Sorry not to follow up on some of these things. I’m in Tracy’s former business. So when things happen (Gaza, NFL playoffs, etc.) I get a little busy. Working on weekends doesn’t help.
.
I’ll spend some time Monday reading through the posts, e-mails, etc., and post back on progress.
.
Promise :-)

Garden_nymphMemberI am in constant awe at the power of this community! What was the decision, is this only for NEW shoes or are you interested in gently used, children’s shoes as well? Three Cheers for BobLoblaw and all the businesses who have volunteered to be drop off locations! Is the 20th the cut off date or will the shoe drive start then and last for a week or two? Yeah!
January 10, 2009 at 6:12 pm #652599
FullTiltParticipantSo Full Tilt is going to have an Inauguration Day party. It will be a potluck thing were we can all celebrate the end of an error. You can bring your shoes there, and we will hold em till they get to the right folks. The actual inauguration takes place early in the day, but we thought it would be a good idea to start this around 6pm. I am trying to locate a good Inauguration beer, but at the very least we will run some sort of beer special.

JanSParticipantJustin, et.al., you are amazing, and a credit to your ‘hood :)
