Why do folks honk, even the driver of a school bus, when you are driving in the opposite direction while they are stopped and have flashing lights? The regulation from the Wa Driver Guide says

“you are not required to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing when the bus is traveling in the opposite direction and the roadway has three or more marked traffic lanes” This happended to me again on 35th Ave SW, which has 4 lanes. I slowed down but I am not required to stop.

I think mainly because people are ignorant of the correct law..

I guess that is why I posted it. I think a lot of people just don’t know.

I think many folks forget the exact school bus regulation(s), but would rather be safe than sorry.

It is a bummer that they added three minutes, or so, to your commute.

I worry more about the folks who could care less about any traffic law…

I appreciate that, and perhaps they were trying to stop me by honking, but it alarmed me at the time and I slammed on my brakes. I had already slowed way down by then. Perhaps this will make a few folks aware of what the rules really are and prevent a possible accident. I think this is a little known rule and the more knowledge people have of it, the better.

@Genesee Hill, stopping when you’re not required to could also cause an accident because it is also illegal and highly unexpected.

Maybe the honk wasn’t directed at you. That’s one of the challenges with multiple lanes, etc. AS LONG AS YOU’RE abiding by the law, and are being careful, don’t take it personally.

Ellen F. Do you have children that ride the school bus? I do, I would much rather people be safe than sorry! Just my 2 cents…kids are unpredictable and do dash out without thinking. Please take the minute or two and think how you would feel if you hurt or heaven forbid killed a child. Let alone taking that child from their family. Are you really in that much of a hurry?

That said, it’s a good idea to slow down as I do even if you are in the clear for proceeding.

Thanks for posting – I didn’t know that, I thought you always had to stop, now I know better.

    EdSane:

That is a fact. But since I drive VERY expensive German and Italian cars, I am not about to let just any old Ford, Chevy, or Toyota crash into my precious rear end.

And where, exactly, in my post, did I say I stop in the middle of Interstate 35? For a lousy school bus.

I drive reasonable and prudent around school zones and school buses. If a Ford or chevy, or Escalade gets in my face, I drop the speed a few notches and call 9-1-1. Renton plese are on

The car is parked and has been parked all evening. The car is locked ,has been locked all evening. The car will not be moved until a drivr is 100 per cent sober to operate her. She is parked in a private driveway and will not move, Period,. She has never moved with an intoxicated driver at the controls. Not one time. And never will be, 100 per cent guaranteed.
