mark harmanParticipantMy parents have finally decided to not drive the car anymore. I am trying to get them to call a taxi when they need to shop or run errands. Uber is too complicated for them as you need a smart phone. Any recommendations for a local taxi company that they may call? Thanks for you input!

biankatParticipantThere’s an apartment building across from our house and every morning I see an Access minivan/shuttle arrive. It’s run by King County. Maybe check them out too? http://metro.kingcounty.gov/tops/accessible/programs/access.html

miwsParticipantIn regards to ACCESS, here is a page that has a couple links with info on that service, plus one for the Hyde Shuttle, either of which may be an option.

I have not yet used either service, but I know JanS has, and may be able to give you the pros and cons of each, from her personal experience.

JanSParticipantHi…for ACCESS van , they will have to first go to Harborview hospital for an interview, etc., to see if they qualify. It’s handy. I used it when I was doing dialysis down on Delridge a few years ago.
Another that they might consider is the Hyde Shuttle. They can sign up online or over the phone…you could help them online..here’s a link. It’s free (donations accepted), you have to make a reservation with them at least 3 days in advance so they can schedule. There may be others on the same run, so no last minute stuff, though. Did I mention it’s free? And if they have a caregiver, they can arrange for them to travel, too.

cherableParticipantI call yellow cab. There is a cab stationed in WS and it usually arrives within 10 minutes. I have had to wait over 1 1/2 hours for the Hyde cab and then share it with others to their destination first. ( Yes, I made an appointment 3 days in advance.)
Yellow is more expensive but worth it in my experience.March 30, 2016 at 1:33 pm #838849
JanSParticipantjust remember, neither of these programs are spur of the moment…resers need to be made in advance, and Access Vans are not free…unless it’s recently gone up, the fare was 1.25 each way per person.
if you have more questions about these services, just email me at mmfeelgood at gmail dot com. My experience has been different that the poster above…I’ve never had to wait (I used them for doc appointments). They call ahead the day before and tell you when they will pick you up.. And, yes, they get delayed at times for traffic, etc. For the cost? It’s worth it, if you have the time…
