shed22ParticipantWonderful winter skies tonight had me looking up. Left me wondering what the shimmering blue/red light in the 9pm south sky was. Venus, perhaps? Such a beautiful show and unique among the stars. Celestial for sure. Anyone know?

JanSParticipantyou need Alice Enevoldson…she would know.
Here’s a link to a planetarium view:

could be Betelgeuse…Jupiter…you can use your mouse to move the sky in the link…

VBDParticipantProbably Sirius. It’s the brightest star we see in the sky (besides the sun obviously…)
It’s in the constellation Canus Major, near and below Orion, and should be south about 9pm.
Planets tend not to twinkle the way stars do, so it’s likely you’re seeing a star.

JKBParticipantIt was Santa Claus, starting this year’s lists.

Hi!
VBD’s got it right.
.
Sometimes Sirius twinkles so hard it looks like it is flashing red, blue, green, white, red, blue. You’d almost mistake it for an airplane, except it doesn’t move.
.
Venus is a great guess, it’s definitely bright enough, but as VBD says – planets don’t twinkle.
Betelgeuse and Jupiter as ALSO great guesses given the location. The red/blue flashing gives it away as Sirius though.

shed22ParticipantYes, Alice! That is precisely what I experienced. Sirius must have been working overtime that night. Quite a show. Thank you, everybody.
