villagegreenMemberJust wanted to give a big shout-out to the folks on our block for unburdening their yard of the 100 year old Doug Fir that has been obstinately daring to survive all these years.
Props to you for doing your part, however small, in helping make West Seattle look a little more like West Des Moines, IOWA!

bluebirdMemberSad. Hopefully it was diseased or something and they had no choice. Or the roots were damaging the foundation. I believe we should have the right to use our own property the way we want, but things like this still bother me.

digidollMemberUnfortunately, these old doug firs are not the safest trees to have anywhere near your house, as the limbs (which can be 50 or more feet up and almost that long) fall during the slightest breezes, and their root systems damage foundations. It’s sad when such majestic trees get cut down, but improper tree choices back when many of our WS neighborhoods were formed are the cause of the problem. My neighbor cut a 65+yr/old DF down a few years back – but he’s not the most tree-friendly guy anyway (he told the city to come back and dig up the trees they planted in the parking strip in front of his house!). I’m now using several of the 2′ rounds from the trunk as outdoor coffee tables and plant stands.

datamuseParticipantI hate to see trees cut down but sometimes there is a good reason. My next-door neighbors had to take down the tree next to their house because it was so close to the building that the roots had started to come up into the basement. As much as I love Norse mythology I doubt I’d want a tree growing through my house either. (Unless it was a tree house. Hmm.)

WSBKeymasterNote that tree protection will be one of the three main topics on the agenda when the entire City Council comes to West Seattle for a town hall style meeting on June 25 at The Hall at Fauntleroy. 6 pm or 6:30 pm, we’ve had city announcements with both times, but we’ll get it straightened out next week, just be there.
