KeithMemberI think of Azuma as ‘lunch sushi’ and Mashiko more as ‘dinner sushi,’ and not just because the latter is only open for dinner. Mashiko has a novelty ‘wow’ factor to it that some people might not be into. Azuma is more traditional but nothing too impressive. I’ve never tried Kamei, will have to check it out.
BTW, here are Mashiko’s rules (which are hard to take *too* seriously):

graysongirlParticipantAzuma is my favorite. They treat us like royalty! The first time we came my husband thought it would be funny to order like he was in a Mexican restaurant and they “got” the joke and have never forgot it. Now they call him “enchilada” man every time we come in. Very nice staff and owners. I like going to places where I feel comfortable and treated like “family”.

FranciParticipantAfter reading these posts last night I had to go get some sushi. I decided to try Kamei – unfortunatly they do not stock tamari (wheat free soy sauce) so I went across the street and tried Azuma. I’m new to sushi so I’m no expert, but it was good.

JimmyGMemberI’m with JenV; we’ve never been back to Mashiko’s after the attitude we got there. Let’s see, spill the soup into one member of our party’s lap and we got nothing more than an “oops” and a bar rag thrown to him? Buh-bye Mashiko’s!
If I need pretentious service, cutesy “rules”, jokey hours (oh how funny!) and fusion sushi there are better places out there for that combo.
Azuma is a great alternative, with good food and value.

GinaParticipantGroovy Chef,
I guess you’re right. What Mashiko put out, they didn’t get back from me, or from my friends.
That would be over 5K from us over the past 10 years that has gone to Azuma and Toyoda in lieu of Mashiko.
