enginerdParticipantSo I started this RANT not because I was upset over a previous thread or felt some need to police anyone here, but rather I had two agendas….
1) To have a little fun… mission accomplished!
and
2) It seemed to me (granted, from very limited experience with the dynamics of the forum), that there were a small number of users that were commandeering posts and running amok with them. I thought maybe I would make the statement that some people find that rude and disrespectful to deviate from the subject of the original post. Certainly in other forums I have used, it is frowned upon. Boy did that open up an unproductive can of worms.
Clearly, very few users on the WSB forums gives a care about jacking threads, its all in good conversation. As I stated in post #6, I now see how you guys roll here, and so I am cool with it. It is indeed enlightening (even funny) at times to let the “conversation†run amok wherever it may lead. In the long run though, it makes the WSB Forums less of a resource for useful information, and more of a chat room amongst a select group of insiders. Certainly there are some nuggets of goodness to be had on the Forums, but there are also quite a few “WTF†moments too.
I certainly do not mean to disparage any of you with any of the comments I have or will be making. You have your little clique of commentors, and so be it. As my sense of humor can be a bit skewed at times, I mean no insult to anyone who felt as though some were implied. Now… having a little fun at another’s expense, perhaps that I am guilty of… but it’s all in good fun, and certainly not malicious. Just as I am sure you all would feel about the replies made in reference to this thread.
I would say in closing though, I have noticed that many posts run the ragged edge of being considered “trolling†(case in point, the majority of the posts in this thread). “Trolling†was specifically acknowledged as against the “rules†in the Forums on 10/29/09 (albeit in a not very well defined manner, so maybe some users do not “know it when they see itâ€). Again, I could care less if that’s how you all play with each other, I’m just saying is all…

the only way the majority of the comments on this topic could be considered trolling is by labeling them off topic
and… this and just about every other site i looked at (including wikipedia:0 )add intention to disrupt or malicious intent to off topic when defining trolling.
You are absolutely right that conversations here wander.. sometimes into and out of the absurd… but thankfully… seldom with malicious intent.
I for one would love it if you would join us on some of our rambles…
i suspect you would bring an interesting perspective to the discussion…
do you fear chupacabre too?
I’ve heard their bite is infectious ;)

Looks like it needs to be already on the internet somewhere.
I saw that picture on another forum. The thread was originally “test no topic” The thread just went past 500 pages a while back so thread jacking does actually happen on other forums. I think the original poster has the ability to respond on their original post and shoo away any trolls if they need to (usually best to ignore them if they are real trolls)

Internet Troll Help
The first step to dealing with trolls is learning how to recognize them. The following traits are clues:
* Does the person ask the same questions worded in different ways? Does the person ignore suggestions or responses from other members of the community? If the community has a frequently asked question (FAQ) section, does the person seemingly refuse to read it?
* Has the person posted inflammatory remarks that have no real substance to them?
* Does he or she make it a habit to post messages that include insults and vulgar language?
* Does he or she respond to other members in a purely negative, critical way?
* Does the person post messages that are generally off-topic? Does he or she seem to want only attention rather than discuss the topic at hand?
* Does the person resurrect old conversations or discussions that were once controversial within the community? Some trolls enjoy bringing back old arguments to encourage dissent within a group.
* When confronted with a counter argument, does the person in question change tactics rather than answer the points made by another member? Does the person employ logical fallacies within their posts?
Note: A usenet convention that migrated to other forums across the net is to post recipes in threads that appear to be posted by trolls.

DPMemberIn re-reading the original thread, I see that enginerd thought he/she was making a straightforward post about a pit bull on the loose and was expecting a limited response. Fair enough.
In enginerd’s own words:
There were two main goals to the original post… 1) to warn others in the area that a potentially dangerous dog was loose in the area, and 2) to ask if anyone knows of the dog so that the owners can be notified that their dog is loose. End of post.
That seems like a reasonable request, and if you re-read the original thread, you’ll see that the first eight posts were on-topic and gave enginerd the response he/she was looking for.

And then someone, who shall remain nameless, seemed to be contesting the proposition that pit bulls on the loose are inherently dangerous. And then other people, who shall also remain nameless, had to jump into the pool as well.
And the rest, as they say, is hystery.
e-nerd, I’ll give you a tip. When the banter gets so infuriating that you just can’t stand to look at it any more, then don’t. Just avert your eyes and step away from the computer — even if you’re the one who started the thread in the first place — and go to your happy place.
If you can’t think of anything else to get your mind off it, try visualizing a cupcake.

— That “principle” itself constitutes a logical fallacy. Can you think what it might be? It’s called begging the question.
Remember that in any sustained argument between two people there will always be at least one logical fallacy employed. Otherwise, there can be no sustained argument.

enginerdParticipantDP, your insight to the matter is appreciated, thanks.
But the one point that you missed regarding the purpose for this thread was that I thought I was doing “you” a favor, at least the forum at large, by pointing out a type of behavior that some people find irritating. I was not necessarily looking for any resolution for my personal situation or feelings specifically.
Again, and as I stated many times now, I am just fine with however the WSB community at large wants to conduct itself, and I certainly don’t take anything written on here personally.

if you mean that any reference to pitbulls in the title made any negative comment about pitbulls germaine.. then you are right.
However.. if enginerds stated topic was to notify about a single incident involving a dog that might have been a pitbull in that neighborhood..
then i still question the validity of the following posts… which is why i spoke up.
the real issue seems to revolve around this concept of this Op or any OP getting the response they wanted from their post.

I would remind you of a post i made after being harassed in Lincoln Park by a woman with a german shepherd. As i remember… it was ok for the woman to sic her dog on mine because i was picking up poo at the time and had the dogs on retractable leashes…
Was i any less frightened by the very real possibility that that german shepherd might have actually obeyed it’s owner’s command and started a really nasty dog fight than enginerd’s wife who was barked at by a dog?
No… but my fear and resulting rage at that incident wasn’t a deciding factor when it came to poster responses.
You post. You take your chances. Sometimes you get the response you want. Sometimes you don’t. The public is a fickle beast.

I need help badly. My Chupy just chewed through my seat belt when I was in PCC today. I yelled at him and now I feel kinda bad. But dammit!! It’s the kinda spice that that life is made of. Whether your trolling for trolls, Thread Jacking for thread jillies, Chupacabras are rampant in Linclon Park, Off leashed squirrels eating Cupcake Royales, the world is good. I’ll take my cheese burger chicken/billy goat w/ a dash of Bacon-Hilter to go.
