LKTParticipantTo the woman walking her giant black schnauzer in the Alaska Junction neighborhood on Friday afternoon: coming home to see you vigorously ripping the branches from the top of my beautiful Callicarpa to make yourself a bouquet was a very sad end to my week. That shrub is the prize of my garden and I wait for its berries all year, offering enjoyment to passersby. Its form will never be the same. Your comment was that some people don’t care. For the record, MOST DO.
Plant lovers: PLEASE ask before you pick. Most gardeners love to share their knowledge and plants, even a leaf or sprig to help with ID, but our gardens can’t handle constant harvesting, especially in high-traffic areas. And a huge THANK YOU to the majority of people who are respectful and enjoy with their eyes!

JanSParticipantI’m so sorry. That’s just rude. It takes a lot of nerve to harvest something out of someone else’s garden. It would never occur to me to do that, so I’m really amazed that this woman thought nothing of doing it. Wow !

ws4everMemberShe should replace your shrub, if she’s damaged it. If you need some rehab pruning (but not for harvesting), let me know. I’d be happy to do it gratis. Shawn

charlabobParticipantThat’s just weird; there is something in the air; stories gratuitous meanness abounds this week and I’m so sorry that someone did this to you. WS4 proves there are still kind people around too.
Seems to me it would be very easy to ask and find out if the person you’re asking is one of those “some people” who don’t care. I’ve given cuttings to people who ask — we have a rather huge front “garden” that can always use pruning.

IrukandjiParticipantWhen she’s next in a prune at will mood, send her to my laurel hedge. VERY rude.

AlkiMacParticipantI’m sorry to hear of you run in with this plant butcher, LKT.
Look on the bright side, at least you still have the plant!

LKTParticipantI do have it, and it’s alive! And thank you to the very kind offer from Shawn to prune it. I’ve done what can be done, but your thoughtfulness made my day!

KatherineLParticipantThis was property damage. Property damage is a crime. The last time I looked, it carried up to a year in jail and $5000 fine. You could have reported her. If you don’t want to go that far, you could still mention to her that it’s a possibility. It might deter her the next time she admires someone’s garden.

LKTParticipantEpilogue: Today I arrived home to a lovely plant and a note of apology on my front step. While I hope it doesn’t happen again, apology accepted and I forgive you. That’s what neighbors do.

KatherineLParticipantThis just brightened my day. I hate thinking badly of people.
