I have been averaging 300-350 miles on a tank with all city driving. However, when I recently filled up at Roxbury Gasoline, I barely got over 200 miles to the tank! I thought I’d try it out because they were a few cents cheaper at the time but it was certainly not worth the supposed savings.

My usual route did not change at all, nor did my driving. As much as I have tried to rationalize another reason, I can’t find one other than inferior gasoline. Feel free to bust that bubble if you have other theories. I should also add that I filled up again (at Safeway) and have gotten my normal/expected mileage since.

That gas station has been sitting idle for over a year, maybe two. I would be real leary about buying gas there for a couple weeks/months until all the old gas has been run out and replaced with fresh in the underground tanks. Maybe thats why they are so cheap right now?

There is a theory out there that people should buy their gasoline at the busiest stations, that way you are guarenteed fresh gas, just because it is always being re-filled.

Out of the way stations have gas sitting around in the tanks for longer time and have more of a chance to get contaminated with water, ect.

talking about gas, i never gave much thought to the safeway gas place but i went the other day put in my phone number and got the best discount ever!!! i paid like 3 dollars a gallon!!!! maybe im a little slow i thought safeway wasnt doing the gas discounts anymore….

Todd, I wondered after the fact if that might be the case- water in the gas from it being idle so long.

Changingtimes, that safeway discount can go a long way. I was happy to get 20 cents off (per gallon) at the last fill up.

For those of you that do not know, Safeway changed their gas discount program recently, now one can get a larger discount. I think it’s for every $100 purchase, you get 10 cents off and those discounts accumulate. They expire at the end of Sept though.

No wonder the lines have been longer at the Admiral Safeway gas station. I don’t go there often though. Remember, the entry is one way. Rant to the guy in the white porche who glared at me for exiting the right way while he came in the wrong way. That porche must be compensating for 2 things. :) Happy Day all.

If you have more than one car, save your Safeway discounts for the larger tank or most miles used vehicle. Use them all at once and make sure you use them all up before the quarterly reset (9-30-08 is the next one)

Also note there is a 99.00 limit to the discounted fuel so don’t go over that if you have a big-ass tank.

    (I read the fine print)

I’m curious if anyone knows for sure that water/moisture in an underground holding tank could account for poorer mileage. Seems to me (and I sure aint a mechanic!) that a car would perform poorly if there were water in the fuel. I’m wondering if the meter on the pump is working properly. For example, maybe you think you are getting 10 gallons when indeed you are only getting 8. Possible?

Ken, thanks for elaborating the fine print because I didn’t realize that it accumulated and rolled over quarterly.

Flowerpetal, I’m certainly no mechanic either but I can tell you that I filled the tank completely up and restarted the trip meter, as I habitually do.

Wow, good to know all the details on the Safeway savings. Thanks!!

And how scary to think of spending more than $99 on a tank of gas. If you have a “big-ass tank” like that you should downgrade to a smaller car. Small cars unite! :)

Another thing to look out for–not sure how common it is around here, but gas with ethanol in it will give you lower mileage as well. I think it’s allowed for gas to have up to 10% ethanol, but I believe it has to be posted at the pump, so keep your eye out.

Okay, I don’t know much about gas but i bought gas at a Roxbury place this past spring (wont’ say the name but it’s a grocery store) and all of a sudden my car wasn’t working right. Hubby thinks it was bad gas. I have since changed cars (car needed work anyway) but my old car is sitting in front of our house not running ever since I got gas there. Hmmm…I still buy gas at that grocery store and have never had a problem before but I have seen on the news about this particular grocery store having bad gas.

We purchased gas at the new Roxbury station last week before leaving town for a road-trip – we actually had better gas mileage then usual. Might be accounted for by all the highway driving, but still… it certainly didn’t hurt our mileage.
