TheHouseMemberSimply amazing.
I stopped pounding my head into brick walls about a year ago, so I won’t continue the debate. I appreciate being able to post my rant as many of you are allowed to do so on WSB.
I also hope to see Bonnie & Rarelyever reprimanded for making personal attacks against me, which does violate this sites rules.
This topic is something that has always made me upset (dates back to when I worked in a grocery store) and I simply shared my feelings. If you don’t like it, tough. I have the right to my opinion the same as you and I posted it in the correct spot.
January 23, 2011 at 2:34 am #714781
Genesee HillParticipantHouse:
I have had my posts deleted several times for good reason. I do, however, suggest that when you “rant”, that you be a little more specific.
Your post:
You didn’t thank me for your groceries since I’m a taxpayer and paid for them.
You’re welcome though…I know you and the dude you were with are working hard to get off those bennys!
What WAS the problem? Bennys? What in the hell are those? Benefits? Benzedrine?
January 23, 2011 at 2:34 am #714782
metrognomeParticipanthmmm … is this a bad time to mention that those of you who have had children in the Seattle Public School system over the past 20 years or so owe me several thank you cards to recognize all the property taxes I’ve paid so your kids could get an education??? Does that include you, House?
Also, if you post your address, I’ll be happy to send you the one cent worth of your taxes that went to pay for the stuff bought by the people you are complaining about.

RarelyEverParticipanti’m so proud of you guys!!! *sniff*
January 23, 2011 at 4:41 am #714788
dawsonctParticipantYou have the right to your own opinions house, you don’t have the right to your own facts.
January 23, 2011 at 4:42 am #714789
BonnieParticipantDelete my comment. I don’t care. Not everybody on food stamps is a bum. That’s my point. What do you think about all those kids getting free lunch at school? Many of the schools in West Seattle have over 50% free or reduced lunch. Are you going to rant about the kids too?
January 23, 2011 at 4:49 am #714790
dawsonctParticipantAlso, I think maybe you stopped pounding that brick wall a bit too soon. Didn’t seem to have any positive effects.
—
I would also appreciate a thank you for the percentage of my tax-dollars which went toward the development of ARPANET, without which you wouldn’t be able to share your bitchy attitude with a large, anonymous online community.
January 23, 2011 at 4:54 am #714791
dawsonctParticipantWell Bonnie, according to Rush Limbaugh, they could be perfecting their dumpster-diving abilities. Dead-beat children with their socialized public education.
Safe, healthy, nutritious food is just for the privileged few you know, sort of like affordable health-care.
January 23, 2011 at 5:45 am #714792
CaitParticipantOMG! It’s 2008 Election Troll Reunion night!! When can we expect to see NewResident back?! *jumpy claps*
What brings ya back ’round these parts for the traditional dead horse beatin’, House?
January 23, 2011 at 6:47 am #714793
dawsonctParticipantThe usual impotent, misdirected outrage.
January 23, 2011 at 8:05 am #714794
TheHouseMemberWow, man. You people are beyond insane.
So, I posted an opinionated rant? I didn’t post it about any of you and here you go literally attacking me.
I wonder if any of you DBs would say any of this to my face where you don’t hide behind the shroud of WSB? If you would, I’d gladly debate you in person.
This whole troll bit is a cop out. If I was looking to stir the pot, I would have started a topic under politics or general talk. I was simply pissed off at seeing 2 people abuse the system. I even stated above that I don’t have an issue with EBT for people that NEED it, but your minds are too damn clouded with HATE to even read that.
Anything I post here, I’d gladly say to your face. Especially things like cry baby and stating that I’m attacking the weak like an abusive parent. SERIOUSLY???
If you don’t like what I say, do what I’ve done to all of you the past year….DON’T SAY ANYTHING.
January 23, 2011 at 9:52 am #714795
RarelyEverParticipantwow, totally shut us up, dude. heavy.
January 23, 2011 at 3:33 pm #714796
redblackParticipantIf you don’t like what I say, do what I’ve done to all of you the past year….DON’T SAY ANYTHING.
no. that’s not how i roll.
it seems to me that you’re the one who stopped debating the issue and started debating people once you got called out for posting what is widely viewed as a callous comment.
so, care to address any of the myriad of relevant replies to the OP? and maybe do your own b.s. filtering by ignoring personal attacks?
or is mike correct in his assessment?
January 23, 2011 at 4:47 pm #714797
JustSarahParticipantTheHouse, you gave absolutely no details of what you actually observed that was so egregiously abusive of the EBT system. Was it the mere fact that these people were using the “bennys,” or were they purchasing items you deemed “too good” for people of their lowly status? Or was there some other violation, like they were both wearing clothes you think cost too much, or did they dare to look too groomed, or did they get into a car you think is too fancy?
These are the reasons I hear people cite most frequently to justify lashing out at “welfare queens.” You were too lazy in your original rant to even throw out one of these examples. Next time, at least add that you watched the woman pull her EBT card from her Louis Vuitton purse, then load the groceries into her 2011 Cadillac Escalade. Oh, and don’t forget that she was buying lobster and champagne – nothing else!
Maybe then we’ll have more sympathy and not attack you.
Really, though – one cannot judge another’s situation by an observation at a grocery store. I usually eat pretty healthfully, but every once in a while I want something “junky.” Most recently I went to QFC to pick up a Diet Coke and some Tim’s salt & vinegar chips. Would it be fair for someone to assume that those are the only items I ever buy at the grocery store? Absolutely not. Thus, it’s not fair for you to assume anything about the people you saw paying for their purchases with an EBT card.
Again, I have no clue what behavior you think you observed, given that you gave us absolutely no details, but you may also consider that the people you saw using the card were not necessarily the people who receive the benefits. Bonnie gave one example of this: foster parents are given EBT cards to offset the cost of feeding an extra mouth. The family may be financially comfortable, but the state does add this “benny” to alleviate some of the financial burden of fostering. The person receiving assistance could also be immobile or sick, and family or friends are buying the person’s groceries for him/her, using the recipient’s EBT card.
Really, there are so many possible scenarios that it’s just not fair to judge without knowing more about the situation. And unless you work for our state’s welfare office, it’s not your right to judge. If you have evidence of abuse of the system you can report it, but watching two people one time in the QFC grocery line does not count.
P.S. I would absolutely say all of this directly to your face. I do not put up with this kind of ignorance and will do everything I can to explain to the person spewing such misinformation why, exactly, he is wrong to make such assumptions. Many people are just parroting what they hear their favorite conservative pundits say, and are easily persuaded to view the other side of the scenario; unfortunately, I am pretty sure your opinions are deep-seeded and aren’t budging.
January 23, 2011 at 5:08 pm #714798
JoBParticipantTheHouse…
You like public subsidies when they go to large corporations…
Your industry has received their fair share… including the last major give away for smart phone providers by the FCC…
But when individuals receive assistance you think that’s wrong..
that people down on their luck are abusing the system and taking money out of your pocket.
got news dude… i am not so happy about taxpayers contributing to your salary either.
but until now i have been too polite to tell you so.
btw.. i think it’s pretty ironic that you of all people would accuse other people of not being willing to say what they had to say to someone’s face.
You know for a fact that i will say anything i have to say directly to your face..
while you … well not so much.
You’d rather ridicule from the safety of a site where the person you attack doesn’t speak back.
It’s sad to see that another year hasn’t made your comments any wiser.
January 23, 2011 at 5:55 pm #714799
TheHouseMember@SarahScoot, thank you. You seem to be one of the more intelligent posters.
Let’s consider a few things, first and they I’ll address your questions.
1) I posted this in RANTS. I wasn’t attempting to open this to debate. Like I said, if I wanted to debate the topic, I would have posted a question. I will explain what I saw, but don’t need to justify it on a rant forum.
2) The people assuming that these people are “needy” in some fashion are doing the same thing I did (assume), but worse. They didn’t observe the couple, their actions or what they were purchasing. I did. The fact that people are assuming without any information at all is worse than my original rant. Without all of us digging into their financial situation, we’ll never know with 100% certainty. Note that I never attacked ALL people using EBT cards, only the ones that I saw that were abusers. Everyone put words in my mouth so to speak.
3) These people were dressed like thugs (more like gang members), purchased non necessary items, had wads of cash in their hands, were making alcohol purchases (not with EBT) and generally acted and spoke like they were lifelong members of the government benefits program. Yes, I am making multiple assumptions but after my observations working in grocery stores I am well aware that abuse goes on.
4) My worldview is that people should only use these benefits in extreme situations and should be working to remove themselves from that program as quickly as possible. In addition, if you need to receive benefits from the government you should be required to only buy the basics for sustenance and positive nutritional value. You should not be allowed to purchase anything non-essential. You are not entitled to use these benefits unless you have exhausted all other viable options. The worldview that many of the posters above appears to be one of entitlement. Their comments make it seem like it is a benefit of living in the United States and that as many people as possible should take advantage of it.
5) You state that I should not make judgements unless I know the entire situation. If we’re in a court of law, you’re right. But we’re not. I observed and inferred. Plain & simple. Many of the posters after me, did the same damn thing with me. No big deal unless you call me an a-hole or compare me to a child abuser.
6) My rant has nothing to do with Wall Street, corporate corruption or the price of oranges. Why bring this into the conversation at all? Do two wrongs make a right? No, they don’t but this thread if rife with that philosophy and double standards.
7) I was a very poor college student putting my way through college. I worked in multiple positions in two grocery stores while I was in college. I saw people abuse food stamps and then EBT cards on a daily basis. IT DOES HAPPEN MORE THAN YOU THINK. I thought about the people purchasing steaks and lobsters with food stamps while I was making $7.50 per hour working and not using food stamps. I thought about them long & hard when I was eating my 99 cent can of soup for dinner. I think about them now as well. I also think about how lazy our society has gotten and it’s pathetic.
There is greed at the top of major corporations, but there is also greed in your own backyard. Neither one is good and one isn’t worse than the other.
If you want to discuss further, I will make myself available at any local bar to discuss in depth.
Oh, and JoB – I am willing to say plenty to your face. I met you 1, possibly 2 times about 3 years ago. It’s been a long time, baby and I have plenty to say to you. I just haven’t run into you. But it’s good to know you’re a fan of the other site! ;)

no.. you’re not against all needy people…
you just think they should give up all rights to choice because they need assistance.
they should never celebrate a loved one’s birth or finding that proverbial job or ….
has it occurred to you yet that even gang bangers..
if they were gang bangers..
have family?
that the woman you criticize may well have kids at home that still need to be fed?
and that the man accompanying her may not be her partner?
You’re a salesman…
You know what they say about assumptions House.
they make an a.. out of u and me
As for meeting you…
LOL… I don’t think so.
I have nothing to say to you House that i can’t say in replies to your comments here …
“It’s been a long time, baby and I have plenty to say to you. I just haven’t run into you.”
really?
it was evident from our last encounter that you don’t understand that comments that are rude when uttered to a woman your own age or younger… are disgusting when uttered to a woman old enough to be your mother …
and equally evident from your current remarks that your manners haven’t improved.
Why on earth would i want to meet with someone with so little respect for other people?
I am no more your fan
than i am of the sites you where you chose to ridicule me and what i stand for.
In fact.. the day your little group of friends claimed ownership..
i stopped going to my favorite beer hall…
hubby can and does drink their beer on tap at work :)
You vastly over-rate your importance to me House…
even as an annoyance.
January 23, 2011 at 6:45 pm #714801
dobroParticipant“Yes, I am making multiple assumptions…”
Mostly ignorant, uninformed, baseless, and, to some people, offensive ones. So, since your rant is so fact-free and assumption-based, as you readily admit, why should anybody give a sh*t what you think or what you say?
January 23, 2011 at 7:05 pm #714802
funkietooParticipant@28 Metrognome. LOL
I have been paying taxes since I was 18 years old. Since I have no kids that I know of and vote for every single school levy, tens of thousands of kids or their parents should be sending me thank you notes! Wow! Cool!
Oh..no..wait, that’s right, I support public education–having graduated from the Seattle School System and the University of Washington. Plus…I believe we should provide three healthy meals to children, K-12, every. single. day. It’s tough to learn on an empty stomach or when one lacks proper nutrition. Healthy food and a good education. Pretty. Basic. Needs.
FYI: 80% plus of Denny Middle School’s students are on free or reduced cost lunches. This is just one of the reasons why, when I teach Junior Acheivement Curriculum (as a representative of my Company), I request a public school like Denny.
1. Wow, man. You people are beyond insane.
–No, I’m not. Just a different point of view and set of solutions to try to level the playing field and provide opportunities to everyone possible.
2. @SarahScoot, thank you. You seem to be one of the more intelligent posters.
–I agree, SarahScoot is intelligent. So are a lot of other posters.
January 23, 2011 at 7:56 pm #714803
dawsonctParticipantOkay, so let me get this straight, it is alright for thehouse to make ASSumptions about other people, but other people aren’t allowed to judge HIM(?) without all the “facts?”
—
I guess from an absolutist moral perspective, stealing a penny is equal to stealing billions and billions of dollars and actively destroying American society and turning us into a two class oligarchy, but I would disagree with that equivocation.
It’s a shame they have managed to fool so many people like you.
Those people at the check-stand who you know absolutely nothing about other than what your bias tells you, are doing FAR, FAR less to subvert your standard of living than are the corporatists who control your apparently simplistic little mind.

Air your laundry in public, you know….
January 23, 2011 at 9:22 pm #714804
JanSParticipantah, yes, perceptions….I remember meeting a guy named Jon at a fundraiser, had a pleasant conversation…and was reported back on here by said person that all we did was bitch. Yes, it’s all in how one perceives things. They were dressed like gangbangers? So what? Now people have to dress a certain way to meet your standards? Did you really, really think that people would back you on this? Really?
