I agree charlabob- hence my post about contacting the owners. I also think that the serious allegations posted by RonM should be addressed with the owners before publicly accusing the business of being racist. It’s a lot different than complaining about a mislabeled price tag.

My experience with others is that when they complain but are reluctant to take their complaint to the source, there is usually a kernel of truth to their story, but not the whole truth. So I don’t doubt RonM had a bad experience at JR’s, but with allegations of racism, people are usually so incensed they take it directly to the business to complain because it is that serious. If RonM doesn’t want to go back in or confront the owners about their employee, that’s his perogative, but then he should take care not to slam the entire business unless he is sure that the owners condone that type of sentiment or behavior. Seems reasonable.

mellaw my key word was before did you call the supervisor before you posted on the blog????in your post here #15 you suggest ron should have called before posting and I am not trying to get on your back i am just keepin it real I would have called in fact I may not have left the property with out talking to a manager or owner. Racism like that makes my blood boil. But after being treated like that ron is not the one we should be reprimanding. And mellaw there have been many of your posts that I have not commented on.And how do I know you walk the walk like you said we dont know eachother, and I too am ok with that. I dont think I am alone in sensing your cup is half empty. .

I talked to them in person at the scene – satisfied? Why are you constantly attacking me on this subject? You essentially called me a liar from the get-go on this forum and have never let it go. What is your problem?

A quick click on the Rants and Rave section show a lot of hypocrisies here. No one was outraged at the slander of HomeDepot, or Pepsi (employee truck), or Lucianas, or Ken’s Yard Service, etc, etc, etc. No belligerent insisting that the owners be called and allowed to refute someone’s experience before you can post about it.

Everyone here has equal space to share their good experience, if that is the case. Then we as consumers can decide if something was a fluke, or a pattern. Every online purchase I make allows me the opportunity to share my opinion on service, for ALL the world to see. Why the hostility towards RonM for doing just that?

Whats funny though mellaw6565 is RonM believes he talked to a supervisor possibel an owner @ the store but you still manage to rag on him.. definitly double standard.

    great point JT!

It’s okay beachdrivegirl, JT, et al! It amuses me too, that the detractors would continue a confrontational and negative experience to satisfy their own prurient interest. That’s a different world than mine. While I have no intention of continuing business with this establishment in any form, they seem to overlook the fact that we found a satisfactory resolution to the problem. We returned the plants and the gardener received his credit.

Because this establishment treated us so badly and expressed certain views we consider inappropriate, we have no intention of continuing a conflict and are happy to relate our experience to anyone interested enough to listen. Life is too short to waste it on such nonsense. Checking with BBB, this business has refused to answer their inquieries. Even so, there haven’t been any negative reports on file with the BBB…until now! Another amusing thing, along with the report filed with BBB, they will take steps to contact the business for “their side of the story” and I assume they will make that report available to anyone who wishes to inquire as well. As I’ve said before, our business with Julius Rosso is finished.

You should gather the facts for yourself and make your own decision when considering where to do your business. Our experience should be only another datapoint in your final analysis.

And their responses have managed to keep this rant on the top of the list!

I have been flagged about this thread and I am sorry to have to need to remind participants to keep it from being personal.

Though one of the country’s few other highly trafficked neighborhood news sites has a policy that rants are off-limits unless you’ve taken it to the source first, I am not, at this point, implementing any such rule. So that’s a valid point for discussion but the digression into analyzing/critiquing the people involved in this discussion is against WSB rules, which I would appreciate you all respecting.

    I have a question.

at what point did the responsibility for creating a positive experience with a merchant switch from the merchant to the customer?

and when something goes wrong, why is it the customer’s responsibility to give the merchant the opportunity to make it right?

frankly, i am tired of being expected to supervise other people’s employees… up to and including documenting who i talk with and what day and time the conversation occurred.. and did i have witnesses?

I no longer do business with anyone by phone any longer without documenting the date, time, person i spoke with and who i should contact if i have a problem or more questions.

This is a substantial waste of my time, but necessary as insurance against that employee’s mistakes… a lesson i learned the hard way when an employee transposed numbers during a payment made by phone.

I just want to do my business.. have their employees do their job.. be treated with respect.. and get what i paid for.

I have to ask why that has become too much to ask.. and why we would continue to patronize any business that treats us badly.

I no longer patronize the local target because of the attitude of some of their employees regarding returns… and i feel no responsibility to spend my time contacting managers and the corporate office. I just limit my visits to target to when i will be in Renton… where i am always treated well.

i stopped doing business with the the local store and have no problem telling anyone why.

If i receive bad service.. or no service.. i now simply walk out of the store and do my business elsewhere.

Yes, i have become the customer who sometimes leaves her purchases in a cart…

If i am going to spend my time trying to get service.. i am going to spend it where that time is rewarded consistently with good service… not where i spend it consistently notifying the management that their service is lacking… or spending unreasonable amounts of time in line waiting to pay for my purchase.

the more i pay for something, the less likely i am to tolerate bad service.

That the consequences of bad service has blossomed from 10 friends to however many readers of any forum should simply make businesses more aware that the customer always has a choice where to spend their money.

After all, a bad review only snowballs on a forum if others have also had a bad experience…

if the company has a good reputation for service in the community, it is likely they will get as many good reviews as bad.

I can agree that it is possible that the initial racist remark was unintentional.. but following a customer… especially one associated with a commercial account.. out to the car demanding that they no longer do business with you… really crosses a huge line. I would have complained too.

If the employee really was a member of the family.. it is even worse. it is bad business.

It is possible this nursery lost not only an individual account, but at least one landscaping account because of the actions of the clerk… and that was long before they posted on this forum… the Filipino community is one tight knit community with a lot of landscaping businesses.

Blaming the customer for complaining about the line a representative from their company crossed puts the responsibility for that company’s customer service on the customer.. not on the merchant where it belongs… thus perpetuating the behavior.

JoB climbs down from her soapbox greatly relieved to have been able to post on a subject that has increasingly irritated her for some time…

i think i will go get ice cream. it’s a good day to visit full tilt.

now that is a place that understands customer service.

“After all, a bad review only snowballs on a forum if others have also had a bad experience…”

Allow me to gently point out that all of the responses, directly addressing customer service at this business, were positive. I trust the lurkers will take that into consideration when deciding what businesses to patronize.

The extended debate ensued because some of us believe that issues should be raised directly. To me, it isn’t a matter of “managing someone else’s workers.” It’s a matter of making sure people know why they (may have) lost my business.

LowmanBeach – thanks for the reminder. I get attacked by the same people on this blog EVERY time I post, no matter what it is about and I’m tired of the personal attacks. It’s like there are a certain few people on this blog who feel the need to get nasty when people don’t agree. It’s a real turn-off on this blog and I’ve talked to quite a few people who would like to respond to threads but don’t because of the nastiness. That’s why I’ve never shared my opinions on topics like politics or sexual orientation. The replies are too nasty for my taste.

I never personally attacked RonM or anyone else on this thread. I stand with Charlabob – it is inappropriate with allegations this serious to post it for thousands to see without trying to determine if it was an isolated incident or a standard policy/practice of the business.

And you are wrong JT, I have urged on other threads for people to contact the owners directly when they have a problem. If it were my business and an employee went off or did something inappropriate, I would want to know about it. Owners can’t always be on site to track the behavior of their employees and, just like living with someone, bad behaviors don’t always come out until weeks after hiring.

    Charlabob – well said!

    Charlabob,

i agree with you… if you are willing to do business with a company… if they are willing to rectify the problem.. in other words, if you stand to benefit in some way from spending your time educating that business… that’s a lot of ifs..

but, if it is my responsibility to let the management of a business know what they have done to lose my business… after i have decided not to do further business with them..

how is that not making it my responsibility to manage their employees?

Rather, isn’t it the business’s responsibility to have some management in place that would oversee their employees interaction with customers..

or to follow up with commercial companies that stopped doing business with them to find out why they lost the business?

or to follow up with the individual customer who felt they got bad service after being notified by another customer of the incident?

An account was credited. They have all the information they need to find out who that customer is and personally contact them if they are concerned about the treatment that customer received in their store.

Customer relations are the responsibility of the merchant.. not the customer.

RonM I am sorry that you, your wife and gardener had to have such a nasty experience the other day. I personally have never gone to the nursery in question, but I appreciate your post and your point of view, and will rethink any such venture to said nursery in the future.

And I agree with your choice to not bring this to the management. That is your choice, and you have every right to make it. Sometimes life is too short…let them manage what they need too, not you.

I hear you JoB… I’m rationing my trips to Full Tilt because I’ve become way too much of a regular there. When they were closed on Monday I decided on a whim to try Molly Moon’s in Wallingford. Their snooty-poo ice cream can’t hold a candle to Full Tilt!!

I like that everything devolves (evolves?) into conversations about ice cream. :)

When a local restaurant opened here in West SEattle years ago, my daughter and I went to try it out. The service, serving person were both horrendous. We didn’t leave, because I was there to try the food (which was good). But when I got home, I immediately wrote to the owner of the restaurant, and told what had happened, and explained that the service industry is usually spread by word of mouth (being in it myself), and so far I wouldn’t give them a thumbs up. I got an immediate letter in reply, plus a $35 gift certificate, and a few years later was told by that owner that he carried my letter around with him for a year to remind him that it’s about service…and I am a loyal customer to this day.

There are always two sides. I understand where RonM is coming from. I also understand that some feel one should try and rectify things so it doesn’t happen to someone else. Sometimes the owners really don’t know about some things..in my case, it worked out well. I’ve never done business with the company in this rant, and probably won’t have a need to ever, but…it sounds to me that if this woman did it once, she is likely to do it again. Management will find out one way or the other, for sure.

Off track…but, we were similarly unimpressed with Molly Moon’s ice cream, though the sorbet has consistently been delicious.

Is Memphis King the one to try?

Memphis King is the one to try if you want bacon in your ‘scream. I love bacon, so I appreciate the idea that it should basically be in everything. But I think I personally have to draw the line at bacon ice cream. I recommend horchata and thai tea! I wrote a review of MM’s on Yelp, so I won’t malign them further here, but Full Tilt has way better flavors and waffle cones.

Full tilt had a chocolate with bacon last time we were there…

and on mondays yuo can still get full tilt ice cream (i think it’s still full tilt) in shake form at Zippys..

    i know…

JoB longs for the days when she could easily zip her jeans…

guess i will have to go buy new jeans:)

i agree that it is often good to let a business know when they could have done something much better… and that something good often comes of it.

    i just don’t think it’s an obligation.

Mellaw6565, I did not comment on anyone by name, I spoke of behavior, yet you chose to call me personally, wrong. These are your responses on other rant threads. I fail to see the consistency you speak of when you continue to state “I walk the talk”.

HomeDepot Rant: “That’s why we go to McLendon’s – there is no substitute.”

No urging to contact the owner .

Kens Yard Service Rant: “I got a bid from them once a few years ago to do some view cutting and the guy/owner who responded was a real jerk and his prices were outrageous compared to other bids. Never used him and have never recommended his service.”

No urging anyone to contact the owner.

Luciana’s Pizza Rant: “We have to chime in with a Rave for Luciano’s – they’re pastas and sandwiches are good and their pizza better than many of the “fast food” types around (i.e. Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Papa John’s, etc…..)Also their salads are HUGE!

Perhaps you hit them on a bad night? We’ve ordered from them for 2 years and it’s always been good.

I’ll have to try Giannoni’s though – always looking for a good NY special.”

No urging anyone to contact the owner.

Pepsi Truck Rant: “You probably won’t get any cooperation from the family that is attached to it. Lots of drinking, partying all hours of the night, etc……It’s the work truck of one of the guys that lives there.”

No urging to contact The truck driver or Pepsi.

JoB…I totally agree…it should never be an obligation. And I totally understand why RonM doesn’t want it to be his obligation. It’s what works for him. I’m surprised he didn’t let the woman have what for right there on the spot (I mean verbally, Ron – lol). What came out of her mouth was despicable.
