AlkiRagdollParticipantGee I love your Swimmming Angels and Pad Woo Sen …. I could eat either for every meal…. but their restaurant looks so dirty. They really need to replace their rugs and clean the place.

BonnieParticipantMaybe best for take out then?

KeithMemberI’m glad at least to have some guidance on what to order there. I’ve tried a few things and it’s all been fine but I haven’t really loved anything.
Have never noticed a problem with cleanliness… especially when compared to some other Junction establishments!

WesCAddleMemberTried it once, not bad. But IMHO there is really no reason to get Thai anywhere else but Buddha Ruksa….or Thailand….

KeithMember…or Thai Tom on the Ave in the U-District!

GenHillOneParticipantI always sort of wish we had tiers when we talk about restaurants here. Though they have to be good regardless, in my head, there’s dining and take out/fast food. *fwiw, my definition of fast food doesn’t usually include a drive thru ;)* Jak’s burger – Zippy’s burger. yeah? Buddha Ruska – Tom Yum. We usually order the same things at TYK with success and almost always do take out or delivery.

villagegreenMemberStrange – I’ve always noticed how clean the place is, although I too usually do take out. I think their Tom Yum is slightly better than Buddha Ruksa’s, but with BR so close to home I rarely go anywhere else for Thai.

JimmyGMemberReally like the crab wontons at Tom Yum Koung.

livingonthebeachMemberI’ve always enjoyed Tom Yum coconut chicken, but NOTHING compares to Buddha’s Crispy Garlic Chicken – to die for!
.
PS, never noticed a cleanliness problem at Tom’s, except for boxes in back of restaurant.

carrieannMemberI have to agree with livingonthebeach here; crack chicken has a hold on me. I actually also really like Pailin Thai’s Phad See Ew. Best Crab Rangoon I’ve had were from Thaiger Room on the Ave, though I haven’t been in years.
Man, and I already had tonight’s dinner planned. Guess I know what we’re having tomorrow!

AlkiRagdollParticipantNext time you are at Tom Yum, look at their carpeting. Everywhere it is dark brown, except under the tables… looks like a grease bomb went off and the tables prevented the grease from settling on the carpet. About half of the seating area is for seating, and the other half has junk stored everywhere. But their Pad Woo Sen is truely yummy as is their Swimming Angels. The condition of the place makes me wonder what they do when they close the blinds……
I dont like Budha Ruska’s or Yum Tom’s Phad Thai (neither of theirs is like what I get in Thailand)… best Pad Thai in the city (outside Thailand) is in Tukwila at Bai Tong (near Toys R US).

datamuseParticipantOoh, AlkiRagdoll, I will have to try that. I’ve only been to Thailand once but Thai food in the states is a pale imitation. I’ve mentioned Kaosamai before (my favorite Thai place in Seattle) but I am always looking for new places.

villagegreenMemberI think the carpet may have been left over from the business that was there prior to Tom Yum – can’t remember what it was. Than Bros down the street has the same issue only much much worse. Everytime I’m in there I think how expensive would it be to rip this crap out and either redo it or slap down some laminate. Beyond that, though, discolored carpet isn’t really going to affect by dining choices.
On a side note, it’s really funny how subjective Thai favorites can be. I’ve been to Kaosamai several times and found it to be OK. I’ve also been to Bai Tong and it is very good, but I don’t know about ‘the best.’ I guess I don’t specifically remember their Pad Thai.
As for whether Buddha Ruksa is ‘authentic’ Thai or not, I don’t really care. From their menu you can tell they are trying to do something interesting and unqiue with traditional Thai dishes. And most often it tastes damn good!
I found this interesting article in The Stranger a while back that argues the irrelevancy of ‘authenticity’ when used to imply that a restaurant is inherently good: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=729129

AlkiRagdollParticipantThis may be rumor, but the quality makes it ring true – Bai Tong was created by family member of a Thai Airways crew member. The rumor has that the Thai Airways crews complained that they couldnt get good food during their layovers in Seattle. The original Bai Tong was on SR99/Internat Blvd at S.160th right near Sea-Tac. I love their food, but find it has a bit heavy on oil but have never had a bad meal there. However, when I dont want to leave WS, Tom Yum is where I go…. but I worry about what I believe is a place that is not clean. The web sez that they have not been cited by the city any more than anyone else on California. If you are interested in checking our your favorite restaurant…..
