I absolutely love the West Seattle Blog but have been put off by the more than occasional comments by contributors that are cynical or snide or just plain mean. For such a group of bright folks, this is disheartening. I believe that we can be just as clever, but with a polite tone. Anyone?

I am thoroughly enjoying watching Griffey play! I don’t care if it’s all hype… this is fabulous.

I also made myself hot chocolate with almond syrup in it the other day and it was lovely.

And today I did not have to put on my North Face jacket and instead sat on my patio…

…That’s about all the positivity/heartening news I can muster today :)

i think we can talk about tough subjects and still have civil conversation…

the deeper we get into the details of our disagreements the more we find that we are more alike than not… and that there is ample common ground personally if not politically to make conversation interesting.

there is a book out now called Snark (i think) that discusses the current tendency to belittle rather than offer reasoned argument…

i hadn’t realized the tendency had become so widespread in our culture that it warranted a book… but after thought i have realized that snarkiness has moved beyond humor into our nightly news.

    That’s not a good thing…

I do not think examples still exist since most got deleted they were that bad, with personal insults and the whole nine yards. Makes me yearn for the political threads of the Fall.

    Welcome btw.

Snark is apparently the combination of the words snide + remark.

It is also currently applied in many cases as a tag for satire so that those who are sarcasm impaired (and often irony-impaired and humor impaired as well) may know not to reply with misplaced flames and angry gibberish.

I can see from the comments that others seem to have their own definitions.

    Snark.. the book

if you click on the table of contacts and go forward you can read the first page where he sets out his definition of snark…

i am all for satire… and i love snide remarks… but gratuitous meanness pretty much negates most of the cleverness i value in both snide remarks and satire…

it is the meanness he addresses that i find so unnecessary… and that seems to fit with the conversation about guidelines here..

David Denby? of the New Yorker? The film critic?

    Ken…

In his intro, David Denby draws the line between that which adds to the conversation and that which is just demeaning.

While i am not so sure he has always stayed on the righteous side of that line.. i do think he has something to say that adds to the conversation.

go ahead.. take a leap and read the intro …

even if it’s written by David Denby.
