Anyone buying Taste of the Wild for their pet? We were new to it, and found the cats were sleeping an awful lot during the first week. Then one cat had a seizure. The next day a different cat had a seizure. We switched foods and… no seizures and their energy is back. I wrote to the company and received only a generic auto response. Then yesterday, this article was published:

This company has a history of poisoning people and pets, then saying oh sorry, and repeating it.

My own cats as well as all of our rescued cats, about 125 per year, have done just fine with Taste of the Wild. Although your link does not work dhg, I understand there is a recall on some batches of food by this manufactuer.

Diamond Pet Foods has expanded their recall to include several other brands – link below. The specific product codes currently in question have not been shipped to Washington State, so far as they know right now. Thoroughly washing hands after touching pet food is a probably good idea, though.

Recalls are based on dead animals and dead or sick people. The cat food we stopped using would have probably killed our cats had we not pulled it. I will be looking for better pet food, certainly nothing ever again from Diamond.

The best company for dry food IMO is Orijen/Acana. They are a Canadian company and locally source ingredients and package their own food (which is very unusual in the food industry, most use large packing plants). Best for canned food is Weruva – I am not sure who they go through for canning but I have never had any issues with their product and it is the only wet food that looks good enough to eat from a human stand point. Personally I make most of the food my cats eat – ingredients from PCC and feed raw – but that is a lot of work:-)I feed a little Orijen and Weruva when I don’t have time to make it.

I’m glad you cats are doing better. And good to know that it may be an issue in Washington as well. I have many clients on Taste of the Wild.

That’s terrible, I have a friend that feeds that to her cat so I will have to mention it to her.

I like Lena feed my cats raw, but I get it through Darwin’s which is a Seattle company. We used to have quite a bit of problems with skin issues but since moving to raw have had no issues.

I am not sure there will ever be a perfectly safe commercially processed pet food. Even the top premium brands can fall prey to bacteria during the processing and storing of the product.

If you read about the way food is made, what ingredients are use and the extrusion process to make kibble, there leaves little doubt that homeade or raw is far superior and safer.

I worked with an animal nutritionist to develop a diet for my dog with severe intestinal illness. Its actually not that hard to make a big batch of food and freeze it using organic, fresh ingredients from PCC – at a very reasonable cost!

My dog has never been healthier or happier – and me too!

If you have concerns, talk to people in the know (not to say you’re not smart, educated people) but there’s a lot of misinformation out there. The folks at Mud Bay had a lot of information that I did not. We here in WA are actually safe from most of the recalled items. I’m really sorry you went through that with your cats DHG, they’re extremely lucky that you had the foresight to pull their food. I struggled with skin and food allergies with my dog when he was a puppy. Thankfully we found something that worked (for now). I’ve often wondered if trying a raw diet would be better for him.

As mentioned above also, Darwin’s is a great company. Local and human grade food delivered to your doorstep. Their dog food is wonderful, cat food is fine for most cats – I have one who could not do the bone in it. There prices are quite reasonable and they are super nice folks.

I have many, many clients who have their animals on Darwins.

A quick note before the following recall update. NO illnesses have been reported as a result of Solid Gold pet food. The company is recalling pro-actively as some of their ingredients come from the plant in South Carolina that has had the Salmonella outbreak and they don’t want to take even the slightest chance of anyone becoming ill.

“FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 8, 2012 – Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., El Cajon, California, announced a voluntary recall of one batch of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and one batch of Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond’s Gaston, South Carolina facility.

Solid Gold is voluntarily recalling the products below, distributed in the United States and Canada from between January and May 2012. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand pet foods due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

The products involved in this voluntary recall are:

Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food, 4 lb, 15 lb, and 33 lb, with a best before date of December 30, 2012 and batch code starting with SGB1201

    4 lb identifying UPC 093766750005

    15 lb identifying UPC 093766750012

    33 lb identifying UPC 093766750029

Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food, 4 lb, 15 lb, and 28.5 lb, with a best before date of December 30, 2012 and batch code starting with SGL1201

    4 lb identifying UPC 093766750050

    15 lb identifying UPC 093766750067

    28.5 lb identifying UPC 093766750081

Best by dates (lot codes) can be found on the back of the bag in the bottom right-hand corner of 33 lb, 28.5 lb and 15 lb bags and the bottom of the 4 lb bags.

Other Solid Gold recipes, sizes or brands of food are not impacted by this voluntary recall.

Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, would like replacement product or have additional questions, may call us at (800) 364-4863 (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM Pacific time).”

I got a sample of that brand from Next to Nature the other day. My kitty seemed fine after, but I probably won’t purchase it in the future.
