KimberleyParticipantMy blood’s not good in this country, my organs probably aren’t either. A federal regulation was enacted in 1998 (I gave bloody regularly when I moved to this country until then) that prevents me from donating bloody. There’s a fear I could give people mad cow disease….Mooooooooooooo!

JanSParticipantdonating blood and donating organs are two different things. Really. If you want to be an organ donor, you could check it out.

KimberleyParticipantI actually did JanS for the kidney donation and once they found out that I’m ineligible to donate blood I was advised it wasn’t worth pursuing unless it was for a close relative.
April 17, 2012 at 6:06 am #755075
JanSParticipantwow…sorry to hear that.So many kidneys are needed – at last count, around 96,000 – that I think they need to consider everyone they can. Yes, I’m on the national transplant list, have a potential live donor in the wings, but not a done deal yet..

DianeParticipantNew Day NW just did a segment on kidney donation this morning; they talked about both live and after death, clarifying misinformation, like “there is no such thing as being too old to donate”
April 17, 2012 at 7:22 pm #755078
JanSParticipanttrue, that, Diane. If one can pass the physical tests, the psychological tests, if one is truly healthy, then donating can happen at any adult age, just about. I even had to ask about being too old to receive a kidney. I wondered at what point it simply is not worth it. But I have been assured that I am at a fine age for receiving a kidney…and , God willing, that will happen in the near future.
Anderson Cooper had a segment on last week about a family who made a facebook page, and lo, and behold, the person got a response form a friend on there. I wrote to Anderson and explained that that is no longer a rare thing, that there are lots of people advertising for organs on FB, and that I’d like to see a whole show about donating organs, esp. kidneys from live donors.
At last count, on 4/16, the stat was: 98,003 waiting for a kidney in the US….sigh…

JiggersMemberI can’t donate a thing. My body is shot!..LOL Does anybody have healthy anti-bodies to give to me? I didn’t think so..

anotherwsmomParticipantI have 7 more months before I’m considered “cured” by the medical world (5 years after cancer treatment). But I will admit I went ahead and added Organ Donor to my license when I renewed last month. :)
