ShibaguyzMemberWell, we’re off to the dog-friendly Ballard Farmers Market. Yup… here comes my soap box and drum again. If any other pup people are out and about at the Ballard market, stop and say hey to us. We’re pretty obvious: two big guys with three red & white Shiba Inu. Some of you have already said hey this past week… always good to meet our neighbors!
talk to you soon…

melissaParticipantIt was nice to see you 5 there! As I mentioned to you, your dogs, and most of the dogs at the market today for that matter, were not only well behaved, but better behaved than my kids were today!
I was incredibly impressed by the universally good behavior of the dogs at the market. People paid attentions to the “Short leash” sign at the entrance to the market & so even though there were dozens of dogs, it was a lovely market. Far less chaotic than ours!

JeannieParticipantI love dogs, and Shiba Inus rock! They are beautiful animals. Glad you all (humans and canines) had a good time at the Ballard Farmers Market.

ShibaguyzMemberMelissa’s kids were a hoot. The little boy kept picking his sister up and carrying her around then wanted her to pick him up… mind you she was half his size. LOL I could tell Melissa was trying to calm them down so I had to hold off my laughter until they left. Great kids Melissa!
Also, thank you for saying hello and for teaching your kids the proper way to approach a dog. Smart lady. No wonder your kids are so great.
Jeannie – Shibas do rock, huh? :)

JoBParticipantshibas rock.. tho mine are not nearly so well behaved in public as the shibas from shibbaguyz:)

melissaParticipantNice to meet you, Shibaguyz! I appreciate the compliments on the kid behavior. They were working my last nerve that morning! I was trying to do all of those things that all of us want from our kids: keep them well behaved and out of people’s way. And now that I’ve got the daughter trained to ask people if she can pet their dogs, I have to convince her that pet doesn’t mean hug! Your guys are lovely and so calm. We’ll be there next Sunday again & hope to see you.

ShibaguyzMemberHer trying to hug our Shibas like she does your big dog was hilarious! The fact is, I can full on take a nap using Apollo as a pillow and he won’t move. Atlas, on the other hand, thinks you want to play when you do that and he would likely have liked her until she was soaked. He LOVES that kind of attention.
You’re right to teach her not to do that though… MOST dogs aren’t so good with that. LOL
We will, as always, be there again this Sunday. The fact is that we’ve been going there for so long now that we’re friends with a lot of the vendors and have visited a few of their farms so we feel like it’s a social thing for us as much as our regular shopping day.
Yes, we get anywhere from 80 to 95% of our groceries from there, but it’s also about seeing our friends, meeting new folks and having fun. The musicians are fun to sit and listen to and the craft vendors always have SOMETHING that pulls un into an impulse purchase or two.
Say hey if any of you see us out there!!

beachdrivegirlParticipantI got to go to the Ballard Market myself this morning. I was very impressed with all of the very well behaved dogs. It will definitely be a weekend stop for us and our little guy Jerry. It really did make me question why the West Seattle market does not allow dogs…

JoBParticipanti went to our market today and both when we passed through to go have lunch at Elliot Bay and when we passed back to go to the market, there were dog walkers kneeling next to their dogs on the outskirts of the market while their partners shopped… well behaved curious dogs who were visited by many who used the market.
there really is no reason why dogs on short leashes and the market can’t co-exist…
shibaguyz.. up for a petition next week? we could see what the West Seattle market customers really think.
i would be willing to help.

ShibaguyzMemberThe answer that TR found out for us was that there was an incident that prompted the manager of some of the markets to not allow dogs. As the manager of the market, she had to make her best call at the time and I’m not going to second guess her on that.
On the other hand, we know what happened and why it happened and it was an extreme case that has not been duplicated for a long time. What happened was someone was trying to train a fighting dog by taking their dog to local parks and public places then have the dog “bait” on the other dogs that were there. These particular people were testing their fighting dog’s instincts to see if they would attack on sight… and they did.
The same people were spotted at two different farmers markets (WS and U District) and three different dog parks that we know of.
Again, if I was the manager of the market and it was my responsibility for the safety of the general public AND I didn’t know anything about dog behavior, I might have made the same choice. I obviously don’t agree with the choice but it is up to her if she wants to change the policies of her market she has been put in charge of and we respect her choice as a manager (not an easy job).
We just happened to go to the WS market today as well (first time in over a year) and saw all the dogs sitting with their people around the perimeter of the market… it was kind of odd looking. Some people on the corner standing next to us at the light even commented on how strange it looked.
All that said… we really go to the Ballard Market for sentimental reasons now because we are such good friends with some of the farmers and other vendors. We meet up with other regulars there and really enjoy the social aspects of that particular market. At this point, even if the manager of the WS Market were to change policies, I think we would still probably go to Ballard.

JeraldParticipantWe went to the Ballard Mkt recently (sans dog) and enjoyed it so much! They have such a variety of offerings, including lots of cooked food to eat on the spot. And it was fun seeing all the dogs, especially tiny ones in sweaters (we’re small dog people). I wish the WS Mkt could expand and include more things — even non-organic produce would be ok with me.
