As a daily walker along Alki Ave. I’ve noticed more and more people letting their dogs run off leash on the sand. Quite common to see-especially in the mornings and weekends 4 plus dogs running around. Since the pandemic started there’s been ZERO enforcement by parks-was minimal before. Even pre pandemic SPD had no interest in contacting dog owners. Am I correct in assuming that the city has made this an off leash dog park?

You are correct sir, Alki Beach is now open for all dogs and their owners to enjoy as they wish. The consensus of the vast majority of people in Seattle is that the leash law and banning of dogs in city parks and school grounds is unnecessary and contrary to the will of the people. The laws are soon to be repealed by the City Council but to date they are just too busy and need to address more important issues. Since the sight of four or more unleashed dogs enjoying their exercise is distressing to you, perhaps you should arrange your walk at another location, such as Third Avenue downtown or in cozy Chinatown.

Crime shouldn’t be tolerated anywhere. But to say that because crime is happening downtown that justifies ignoring the law on Alki is a unique defense.

CarDriver – I encourage you to ask dog owners to follow the rules. I know it is uncomfortable sometimes and people will yell at you to “mind your own business” or other comments. Just remember that being an adult is sometimes difficult, especially when dealing with people who behave like children.

CarDriver – If you are seeing people violate the leash laws, I encourage you to call them out. I know, I know. They will tell you to “mind your own business” or worse. Adulting is hard – especially when dealing with children. Thank you and I hope you are able to enjoy our beautiful parks!

Just got back from a nice walk along Alki Ave. Counted 10 off leash dogs on the beach. How much you want to bet they’re happy to complain about bad drivers/car thieves/shoplifters and how SPD should enforce the law by ticketing/arresting them? Guess they thought nobody would notice them holding a halo over their heads.

Keep an eye out if they drive or live nearby. If you can ID them and report them to animal control they will get a hefty fine, especially on Alki (up to $500).

General advice for confronting these adult delinquents: keep your cool, ask that they leave. If they argue take a picture and report them and don’t talk with them anymore. Simple as that.

Eventually they will get the hint that they can’t decide which laws apply to them.

Even if you can’t ID them, if you see repeat offenders Animal Control will give them a bundle of tickets for old violations once they can identify them.
