skeeterParticipantdobro – we’re pretty much on the same page. I don’t think I was playing a semantics game. So let’s see if we agree on this: Tax revenues should be used to pay for healthcare. All people in the country, regardless of wealth or taxes paid, should have access to the healthcare at no additional cost other than the taxes they pay. (That’s what I meant by “free.”)

skeeterParticipantLet’s take our healthcare coverage for all Americans one step further. This is where I am unsure how I feel. Sounds like we agree with healthcare access for all. Should that “all” include healthcare access for those who are in the U.S. without documentation? On one hand we want to show compassion for the sick and dying regardless of citizenship. On the other hand we have finite resources and a “lets take care of our own first” mentality. I wonder how other countries with universal healthcare handle this.

dhgParticipantFinite resources? Really? Tell it to the military. We spend more on wars and weapons than the next 10 largest spenders. The money is there. It just needs a little reallocation and Dick Cheney would have to give up a bit of his pile of cash.

mtnfreakParticipantNot every progressive, post-industrial nation is using single-payer health care systems. We actually have more in common with Switzerland than with Canada in this regard, and I can easily imagine a time where our health care system could look like this:
I was able to spend a month in Switzerland last April, and while I was there I learned a lot about this system from direct experience.
I’ve always thought that having health care as a employment benefit was inefficient anyways – I’d rather be paid a little bit more and have the choice to pick my insurance plans. In fact, this whole idea of health-care-as-employment-benefit only came about during the wage freezes of WWII by employers trying to recruit new hires.
Eliminating health care as an employer benefit would also eliminate a lot of the conflict right now regarding religious beliefs of employers that conflict with the ACA minimum standards.

skeeterParticipantI agree 100% mtnfreak that employers don’t belong in the healthcare mix. It is insane that my employer determines what medical policy is most appropriate for my family. Imagine if employers decided what groceries we purchased? Or where we took our vacations? Or what house we live in? I would rather employers just pay workers money and then we decide what plan is most appropriate. Same as we do with our housing, transportation, vacations, food, etc. This current system makes absolutely no sense to me.
