Even with local news coverage (January 09)of the cross walk flags at California Ave and SW College St, all of the cross walk flags that my son and I have put out have been stolen. This includes all of the replacement flags. 25 flags in total have been stolen. I am just really, really curious what the heck anyone wants with them? Its dissappointing to say the least. I do not have anymore money to waste on flags that will just be stolen in a day or two. Oh well, we tried.

I wish I had an answer for you, Mark. I just don’t understand the mentality that would steal anything, let alone something that’s been put there for others’ safety.

It would be bad enough, if it were the City issued flags, but it’s even more disturbing when the flags were supplied by a caring neighbor (not that the thieving losers would know the difference, or even care) such as yourself.

I don’t get up to that area on a regular basis, as I’m down towards the other end of California, but I think what you did was a great service to the community, and a great example to set for your son.

Too bad he’s had to witness the negative side that sometimes occurs when one neighbor tries to help others.

Hopefully it won’t discourage him (or you) from helping in the future.

You and your son have done a good thing. I travel that route daily and was almost hit once trying to cross at that intersection. When you started that project I thought it was such a neat thing for you to do for our neighborhood and I applauded you for it. If you are willing to keep trying I am willing to make a donation for more flags. Perhaps other neighbors will do the same and maybe some local business owners as well. If you post a mailing address or PM me (don’t know how that works)I’ll make a contribution.

Thanks so much for educating the community about the California Ave SW & SW College St marked crosswalk.

We look forward to an update on pedestrian welfare in our community. The City’s response to the pedestrian accident on Avalon & Orleans was removal of the marked crosswalk. The City judged the marked crosswalk on Admiral Way & City View as a liability so they removed it. A pedestrian was killed in the marked crosswalk on Admiral Way & 47th, so the City freshened the signage and installed “traffic calming” (traffic narrowing) “bulb-outs” and a few days of SPD emphasis patrols. Residents in those affected areas have asked the City for pedestrian controlled stop lights, but those requests are rebutted with SDOT citing national guidelines do not indicate the need to do more. Therefore, there are numerous local grass-roots efforts to install ad-hoc safety systems.

November 3rd is the time for change. The Mayor, City Attorney, City Council Position 2 (Conlin), Position 4 (Drago), Position 6 (Licata), & Position 8 (McIver) need to know that killing, injuring, or intimidating pedestrians is repugnant.

The other worrisome aspect about Admiral/47th is when wheelchair-bound folks from the nearby Life Care Center use that crosswalk. Cars that take the curve fast are apt to not see them, and westbound drivers have the sun shining in their eyes at dusk.

Stop lights would be good. Hopefully, drivers would obey them more than they do the stop light at Admiral/59th. Are those pedestrian-controlled flashing “turtle lights” (or whatever they’re called) that they have in downtown Kirkland very effective?
