Joe DonleyMemberMy family and I are new to Seattle from Oklahoma City, OK. I was wondering what the best way for a family to meet and greet other locals is. I’m over in the Delridge area near Westwood Village if that helps at all.

MarleyBMemberFirst off, welcome to Seattle! People are probably going to tell you about the dreaded Seattle Freeze: yes, it exists, but it doesn’t have to. Depending on the age of your family, go out and do things you enjoy doing. Parks are great places to interact with other families doing the same thing you’re doing- playing, enjoying the great scenery, being outside. We tend to go outside A LOT- regardless of the weather. Get a good rain coat and take advantage of the awesome parks around here, especially Lincoln Park, Alki Beach, etc. But don’t be shy- introduce yourself to other people there and strike up conversations.
Also, we’ve met people doing nerdy things like gaming (Blue Highway Games comes to mind, Card Kingdom), Volunteering (there are family friendly activities), and if you like beer, that tends to be a great way to meet people. Beer Junction has a Thursday tasting (no kids allowed) where lots of people gather and it’s a good way to meet people. Super Deli Mart (on 35th) allows kids and has $3 pints all the time.
Tell us more about the make-up of your family and what you like to do and I might have more suggestions. My best advice- Seattlites can be hard to crack at first, but we’re nice people under our Vitamin-D starved exterior shells :)

Joe DonleyMemberWell, I have a 4 y/o son who loves the park. Whereas the wife and I are both about 30ish. We’re not big drinkers but we love good food and nice views. My son especially likes going to the park and running around. I’ll have to check out Blue Highway Games and Card Kingdom.

BonnieParticipantWelcome! Well, since you have a 4 year old I’d suggest checking out the library storytimes or the Barnes and Noble storytimes. Might be a good place to meet some parents with kids your child’s age. Once it is nice out it’s easier to meet people at the park.
