I am in the market for some, so taking a poll….

Les Schwab or Courtesy Tire? And why?

Discount Tire – you can shop them online to get a general idea of cost (usually less expensive that the dealers you mentioned) and they never try to scare you into an alignment.

I bought new tires recently at Les Schwab. The reason: several times they’ve inflated and/or patched tires for me at no cost. Obviously it’s just a ploy to get you to come back and buy tires there, but it worked on me; the service is always good and I feel I’ve gotten more than the value out of the tires when you include the free repairs.

I’m a fan of Les Schwab. I have always had great service at any location I’ve been to (including Portland), and bought new tires at the West Seattle shop last December with no complaints. I don’t feel like they take advantage of people either since I’ve brought my car in twice this year for brake inspections, certain that they need to be replaced but I’ve been assured they’re just fine. I feel some places would insist I replace them just because, but not Schwab!

I wouldn’t consider it a “ploy”. It’s just darn good customer service.

I have always purchased my tires from Les Schwab. I have found them to be honest, respectful, helpful and reasonably priced. You pay for what you get.

    A little story:

My wife and I were traveling to visit family towards Enumclaw in our Ford Explorer Sport many years ago when one of our tires basically exploded. While I was pulling out the spare, a Les Schwab big rig service truck drove past, backed up and the guy jumped out and proceeded to fix my flat, air the tire, wiped up a little mess AND took the damaged tire. A tip of the cap and he was on his way. I was floored.

    Good company. Good people.

Great story, Velo_nut. I meant “ploy” only in the most positive way. :)

I’ve only ever had good experiences there. There’s even free popcorn while you wait!

I HIGHLY recommend Les Schwab for a number of reasons, the most important to me is that there is a Les Schwab in almost every small town in Oregon and Washington, which means if you need warranty service while on a trip within the NW, you will most always be within a short distance of a Schwab store.

    .

I also suggest reading “Les Schwab Pride in Performance: Keep It Going,” written by Les himself back in the mid 80’s.

    .

Check out this .pdf story full of background history about Les Schwab, written back in 2000.

    .

Les passed away around 2007, but his business model continues to live on!

    .

I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before they become a WSB sponsor?

    My Les Schwab story…

    .

I contacted the WS Les Schwab looking for a set of inexpensive used tires for an acquaintance that was down on his luck and living in his car. They told me they had a set and to bring it in. As I was getting ready to pay the $140 bill, the manager came out and told me there would be no charge and to consider it a donation. They have made a customer for life!

Here’s another vote for Les Schwab. I’ve had nothing but amazing and consistent customer service (and products) from locations in both Seattle and Spokane. They don’t get pushy about upselling, are good at explaining your options and the tire warranty is better than anyone else, as far as I know.

Discount Tire in Burien. Always. They just do tires. Cheap. And they are pros at tires.

No siping nonsense. No brake jobs. No oil changes. Just tires.

I’m really happy with my experience buying tires at Courtesy Tires. Though I shopped Les Schwab, the salesman insisted on the $50 stiping upgrade on high-quality tires. That may have been needed in the 50s, but not with the tires I was considering. Courtesy Tire talked me through their experiences with the three tire brands I was considering and have been great with follow-up, letting me in the work area and coaching me through some of my own repairs. I heart them.

Another vote for courtesy tire, I have had a good experience with them buying new tires.

Les Schwab on the other hand tries to sell the stiping. I also had a bad experience with their Renton shop during some other maintenance, they managed to cut some critical brake wiring that ended being a couple hundred dollars to replace from Toyota. Huge pain & hassle.

Yes, luckymom30, Costco is a great option. And have used them. But, they will only place tires on your car that were the manufacturer’s standard issue tires. Soooo. if you drive a high performance Pinto, they will not put cheap tires on that wreck of a car…

If your car came with V rated tires when new, that is all they will use. V rated. Expensive.

I agree…have priced the Costco tires…tres expensive. I have also checked prices at Courtesy Tires…only 2 tires that would fit my (older) car…and both more than I want to spend…over 600 bucks for a tire with only a 40K warranty? Hmmm…so it’s looking more and more like Les Schwab for me, as I like to shop as locally as possible…

I purchased four tires from Les Schwab recently. Customer service was excellent! Also, comparing the ‘brand’ of tires I purchased with other online retailers they were within 6 dollars of most of the competition. I also needed to have my front hub assembly replaced and they were about 70 bucks cheaper than other local competition.
