CeeBeeParticipantI found a fabulous sandwich place in Burien today – Hey Paison! on 152nd. I was sitting there with the pastrami juice dripping down my fingers and calculating how to get this place to open up in my neighborhood, Morgan Junction. I said as much to the owner as I left, and he’s actually interested in opening another location, and WS might be one of his choices. But his preliminary inquires aren’t turning up any open locations. I said I’d post to see what help all you food fanatics could offer – any ideas for him?

CeeBeeParticipantIt occurs to me to give more details. The space he has now had 6 small tables, the deli case & counter and the stove for cheesesteaks etc. cooking. Sandwich variety was east coast hoagies, website with pics of size and menu is http://www.heypaison.com

IrukandjiParticipantPerhaps a hostile takeover of the Jack in the Crack on Admiral? Anyone with info down toward Morgan?

JanSParticipanthow about the place on Calif Ave that used to be Ovio and then Beato…it’s not Morgan junction, but should be ample room….
I would welcome this guy to West Seattle with open arms…I’ve heard his Philly Cheesesteaks are authentic and yummy…

YardvarkMemberChuck & Sallie’s on Cali!
December 13, 2009 at 3:49 pm #683920
YardvarkMemberI’ve been dying for a great cheesesteak close to home.
December 13, 2009 at 5:23 pm #683921
JanSParticipantYardvark, I’ve also heard that they have excellent cannoli, made by the owner’s mom…yeah, would be nice to have them around…

JenVMemberI second the old Beato location. Or the Ama Ama empty space.
December 13, 2009 at 6:30 pm #683923
BonnieParticipantIsn’t there a few empty spaces in Westwood Village? Not sure if that’s the type of ‘store front’ they want or not though.
December 13, 2009 at 7:14 pm #683924
SarahScootParticipantI would assume that both the Beato and Ama Ama spots are quite pricey, given location and size. Also, they’re both for sale, not rent – do you know whether the owner would prefer owning or renting his space?
I’d think the Westwood Village lead is most promising. There are also several open storefronts in live/work buildings between Morgan and Alaska Junctions, but I don’t know if those locations would get enough traffic.
Chuck & Sally’s location would be perfect, but that building appears to be a complete tear-down. The proximity to BPP is perfect, though!

JoBParticipanti thought the Ama Ama space was taken by the folks who brought us the Bamboo Grill.
December 13, 2009 at 11:15 pm #683926
GinaParticipantthe old Dante’s footwear space next to Zatz bagel, California and Admiral.

luckymom30ParticipantWe discovered Hey Paison! 2 years ago, the pastrami is to die for! And the yummy cheesecake, oh my gosh it is delicious! We would love the idea of this restaurant coming to West Seattle!

christopherboffoliParticipantJanS & JenV: Don’t you read the West Seattle Blog? :-)
The old Ovio/Ama Ama space is slated to open with a new restaurant after the holidays: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=22316

MTMParticipantJefferson Square?
December 14, 2009 at 1:34 am #683930
CeeBeeParticipantThese are great ideas and I also flashed on Chuck and Sally’s as well – although the clean up job may be more than they want to take on. I’ll pass these on, and any others that come in, thank you!

JayDeeParticipantWhat about the part of Capers that a new business (can’t remember which) was trying to move into. In the post, the owner said he was not moving into the entire former Capers space (Thereby implying that the remainder is available…My two cents.)
December 14, 2009 at 2:04 am #683932
johnnyblegsMemberThe Beato space was quite affordable. The price was dropped quite a bit to get someone in there. Emphasis on WAS. The space is now taken. I don’t know who or what is going in but I think it’s off the market.
When I was at Full Tilt in White Center the other day, I noticed a few spaces for lease on that same block. The Ama Ama space is just way too big; especially for a sandwich spot. Maybe if it was turned into some kind of food court market….that could be kind of cool.

JoBParticipantJanS and I had lunch at Hey Paison! today (really really good) and spoke with the owner.
One thing we could do for him that would make a difference is nominate his sandwich shop for Diners Drive-ins and Dives.
It’s a natural for that show… and he has already been nominated.. but they respond to numbers.. the more nominations a place gets the more likely it is to end up on the show…
Anyone else interested in a West Seattle Blog forum write in campaign?
The business bump would likely propel him into West Seattle faster:)
Int he meantime, if you haven’t been there yet, it’s well worth checking out.
December 14, 2009 at 3:32 am #683934
JanSParticipantyes…really, really good steak and cheese…I had w/ provolone and grilled onions. The bread/roll was outstanding…not like the usual fare you get if you make your own…these are really, really good. I can’t say that enough. We didn’t have one, but they have big, fat Jewish pickles in a big barrel next to the counter, too. And by all means, try the chocolate cannoli…yummmmm !~
December 14, 2009 at 3:34 am #683935
JanSParticipantHey, Christopher…I was suggesting the place down by me…not Ama Ama. The place where Ovio started – where Beato was last located. Yes, I read the blog…yes, Ama Ama is going to be a restaurant /lounge operated by the owners of Bamboo Bar and Grill…..don’t you read the blog?
Johnnyblegs…the Beato space still had a sign up as of this afternoon…maybe they just haven’t gotten around to taking it down yet.
And since Wingdings hasn’t finalized anything yet for the Capers space, maybe that would be a good location…I’d much rather this than wings anyday….:)
December 14, 2009 at 6:02 pm #683936
villagegreenMemberThere’s also the spot right at the Junction where the baby clothing store used to be. Not sure if it’s rented yet, but walked by yesterday and saw it was empty.
December 14, 2009 at 11:37 pm #683937
MookieMemberIs that space still available at the north end of Jefferson Square (where the Starbucks used to be)? Also,I’ve never been to Hey Paison! before, and now will be making a trip just to try it!!
December 15, 2009 at 12:34 am #683938
FullTiltParticipantTry the egg and peppers. The most amazing thing I have ever had. Those big ass Jew pickles are just right also. Not too soft, and not at all sweet.

celeste17ParticipantWe tried it tonight and we are officially hooked. Mom had a pastrami with coleslaw and I had the meatball sandwich. Mom being from New York originally really loved the sandwich and the meatball was really good the roll almost fell apart because the meatballs were so juicy. We met the owner and told him we would be back.
As for location I was thinking it would be nice if they could find someplace down on Alki. I know the old Pegasus location is still empty. I looks like it was once two places so maybe they could rent half.
