My next job will probably be in Redmond. I understand that the commute from here would be killer.

Is there any area near Redmond that has walkable restaurants and a grocery store or two? I really like the slightly dense feel of the Alaska Junction.

Downtown Redmond is actually decent. It’s no junction, but there are some shops/restaurants, etc. near Redmond Town Center.

It’s not worth moving though. It would be much better to just work 7 to 3-4 and brave the bridge before traffic gets really ugly.

My husband has been doing the daily roundtrip commute from West Seattle – Redmond for the past 6 years, and it’s manageable, but definitely no picnic. I’ll direct him to this post, since my experience with the Eastside is slightly limited, and see what he can recommend.

I do that commute; it’s tolerable in a vanpool. The worst part is getting to I5, after the convention center it’s usually wide open (since the tolling began).

There are some recently built apartment/condo buildings near a QFC that are within walking distance to a few places I’ve heard goos things about but haven’t been to. Not a lot of character though.

Nearer the older part of town, there’s a Matador among other places. I also like Taqueria El Gallo, taco truck like food with taco truck like prices but indoor seating.

In Redmond Town Center (where I work) there is a sandwich place that makes good bahn mi, a Thai Ginger, a decent Turkish place, and an OK Indian buffet. Nothing to write home about but all are decent.

In conclusion, think about dyn99’s idea. And if you can get into a carpool/vanpool (esp a vanpool since the 520 toll is waived), it would make it even better.

@Jeffrey43 Sounds like you don’t even know for sure you will be working in Redmond. I spent 11 years making that commute from North Seattle, and then later from West Seattle. Van pools, and flex hours are the only way to go.

    .

Redmond is ok… but lacks the charm of WS. My advice is wait and see IF you end up working in Redmond, and even if you do, then give the commute options a try.

My husband does that commute every day and has for the 11 years we’ve lived here. It isn’t fun, but the trade off of living in west Seattle is worth it to us. We are just not east side folks. I think the worst part is getting to I5 and coming home when there are games at the stadiums. He tries to adjust his schedule on those days. I believe he drives I90 to 148th and up to Redmond that way most days and vice versa on the way home. Good luck to you either way.

Downtown Redmond is very nice. There is also a lot of great bicycling. If I worked in Redmond, I would live in Redmond. Life is too short to spend over an hour a day in a car if you think this is a long-term job. That’s my 2 cents!

But to specifically answer your question, yes there are many newer living units in downtown Redmond within walking distance of restaurants and grocery stores. Check it out this weekend!

Like others mentioned, the area near the QFC has Trader Joes and a few restaurants and is ok, but more of a strip mall setup than a junction setup.

I’ve been doing the commute for about 8 years and will continue to make it work via flex hours, van pools, etc… to me, life is too short to be stuck in Redmond during my non working hours ;)

I actually grew up in Redmond. I like the Eastside but have to say unless you have an incredible pain tolerance that commute would be killer. Downtown Redmond is okay – but definitely nothing like the Junction. If you are looking for density I would check out Kirkland. Lots to walk to and see there.

While not quite junction esque Woodinville is pretty fun. Can’t go wrong walking to wineries and it has grown a ton in the past few years!

If your job is with Microsoft, they have a commuter van called The Connector.

I work in Kirkland and live here in WS. I commute every day. It’s worth it for me to live on the westside. :) Maybe you can make it work!
