hopeyParticipantCan anyone recommend a home inspection service specifically for black mold? I’d be most interested in a company that uses a specially trained dog, but all recommendations are appreciated.

DBurnsParticipantSo glad you asked – I was starting my spring cleaning on Monday and moved a dresser out from my daughter’s wall and there it was!! The corner full of mold-looking spots!! FREAKED ME OUT!! First thing I did was search for Mold Removal companies and called a friend who recently moved out of a house full of mold. She talked me down off the scared to death ledge (this is my child’s bedroom!!) and we talked about the best ways to go about figuring out what to do – I ended up having a great phone conversation with Scott at Mold Inspection Sciences, Inc. who was very informative (without diagnosing) and had Gerry come yesterday to do the inspection. I HIGHLY recommend this route for these reasons: IF you have mold that needs structural work to be removed, they will give you the information to put you in the position of telling the contractor what you need, versus the contractor telling YOU what you need. It puts your fears at bay through education – Gerry was in my small house for over 2 hours doing the inspection – he’s a former contractor as well and though they are very specific that they do not make any recommendations (conflict of interest) he was really easy to talk to and we felt completely satisfied with his visit. We opted to have 5 air samples done; (totally optional) because the basis of our concern was about what we are breathing, not necessarily property damage, but that recommendation will come with the result as well. On Monday we will be emailed the results of the air samples along with a report made from Gerry’s notes with recommendations on what to do next. Because last summer was so cold and this winter so long and wet, they told me that the mold is REALLY bad this year. They also said that mold is everywhere and the “scary” mold is rare. I really don’t have ANY extra money but honestly, I feel this was money well spent. The inspection was $249 and the samples were $99 each. With the idea that a contractor could come and tell us to replace the corner/wall, etc. and have not researched the source and causes throughout the house, I just felt this was a great place to start.

DBurnsParticipantNot sure if this is allowed but I have no other affiliation with them other than my experience yesterday –
Mold Inspection Sciences, Inc.
206-407-3352
info@seattle-mold-inspection.com
I started with and email and then a phone conversation with Scott.
Best of luck!
