    Are they serious?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimming/news/story?id=3881374

If you thought the drug war was insane before?

What I love about the anti-marijuana jihad is its total incoherence. The argument, so far as I can tell, is: a) marijuana destroys people, renders them incapable of productive and worthwhile lives; b) yes, the new president and the greatest Olympic swimmer of all time have smoked pot; c) but that means we have to punish them all the more!

Because they disprove the lies required to sustain the Prohibition. The more the myths of the anti-cannabis brigade are exposed, the more they have to be enforced

you can’t prosecute someone for smoking something in what appears to be a marijuana pipe…

    it’s only a photo

but you sure can embarrass them

    and maybe end their career…

This makes much more sense to me.

Marijuana is not the evil drug the government wants us all to think it is.

The war on marijuana is insane. This should not end a career. However, does it violate any contracts he held?

Marijuana , IMO, is far less dangerous than alcohol – if he had been in the photo passed out with a beer in his hand, the beer companies would be swamping him with advertising deals.

That’s really why he apologized – his ad deals are going to dry up and that’s a big source of any Olympian’s revenue. For him, I don’t think smoking is the issue.

I’d love to have the cops focus on something else other than busting people for weed. If I can get as much alcohol as I want at the state run liquor store (in the Junction) and consume it responsibly or not in my own house shouldn’t we just get over all this BS and let people that want to smoke weed, just do as they please? Best part, I’d love to see it taxed to help pay for schools. Ha! Irony.

I think he needs to be more worried about that DUI he pulled a few years ago. It appears Speedo and Omega still back him, but he’s down to one strike left.

I just think it is amazing that he smokes dope and is able to win a gold medals. When I used to smoke pot I just wanted to freakin eat cheetos and watch movies. Man, I wish I had some cheetos right now.

    Mmmm Cheetos.

If they legalized it, not only would the government get more taxes, they would have more support products. Try Windex Bong Cleaner. Gives you that fresh aromatic lung burn. Phelps could start his own designer pipe and bong line. Just think of the reality shows “Homegrown Improvement”.

Alas, until the government can do a two minute breathylizer test I am afraid it will stay illegal.

lol Rich, dontcha know, there’s already a ton of branded bong cleaning products out there. ;) Personally I prefer good ol rubbing alcohol cuz it’s cheap, but if I were to go with a product Grunge-Off would get my vote. It’s a bit expensive to use on the larger pieces but great for cleaning smaller accessory parts.

Phelps would have some competition in the designer smoking glass business (notice that roor he was sucking on? I have a photo of the whole thing without a swimmer attached to it if anyone’s interested) but I’d be lying if there wasn’t some sorta-joking talk about getting him a tube endorsement. The high end smoking glass community is actually where I heard about this first, a full day before most news outlets got a hold of it. Everyone thought it was a hoax in the beginning.

I think the lack of quick-detection aspect of cannabis intoxication does play a part in its continued prohibition, at least as a legal recreational substance. There is no breath test for vicodin or clonazepam but those two substances are legal with prescription and just as, if not moreso, impairing than cannabis. I believe that the smear campaigns (“propaganda”) conducted in public schools, on television and on the internet play a large part in negatively affecting public perception (although you wouldn’t know it reading some of the comments in this thread), which in turn plays a part in the government’s current “La La La I Can’t Hear You” attitude towards logical and reasonable arguments against prohibition. Mostly I think though that the main thing is that they just don’t want to admit they’ve been so wrong about this for so long.

Wow, a first. Something we all agree on, have the planets aligned, has Hell frozen over?

The link I provided above talks about the law Seattle passed in 1993 saying that law enforcement will make marijuana its lowest priority. Marijuana arrents went from around 500 in the 90’s to around 35 last year with no measurable increase in useage. Even the opponents have admitted they were wrong on this one.

Initiative 75 does an outstanding job of protecting people within city limits, but outside of Seattle in Washington state there were almost twelve thousand people arrested on cannabis possession charges in 2007. Fortunately this year there is a bill aimed at reclassifying adult possession of forty grams or less of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a class 2 civil infraction throughout the state of Washington. Under current law, possessing as little as one joint is punishable by up to 90 days in jail. If the bill passes, possession of cannabis under 40 grams will be punished by a $100 ticket. Voters in Massachusetts passed a similar measure in November.

I just got this email, how timely. Just one more reasson to love Joe McDermott.

Thank you for writing to me in support of Senate Bill 5615 and itscompanion legislation House Bill 1177. I am proud to be a cosponsor of this bill.

Reclassifying possession of 40 grams (roughly equivalent to two packs ofcigarettes) or less of marijuana as a Class 2 Civil Infraction with a$100 fine will replace the harsher misdemeanor penalty that is moreappropriately suited to more serious crimes. This reclassification willallow police to respond to more important matters and is estimated tosave millions that are currently being spent on the processing anddetainment of these offenders. Massachusetts passed a similar law lastyear, and I believe that we can pass this bill now. I will work throughout this difficult session to get this legislationenacted. Thanks again for the email. Please keep in touch.

As I understand it, most of the endorsement contracts come with “morals clauses,” which he is probably in violation of. I think he should cut his losses and become a spokesperson for NORML!

I just found this online petition against Kellog. You have to read through it.

Great petition, Full Tilt, thanks for the link!

I’ve been semi-boycotting Kellogg’s already (meaning I rarely buy their products, except when I have that rare hankering for Pop-Tarts, that another brand of similar treat can’t provide, or is not available. And, on the occasions, again not too often, I’ve bought a brand that I didn’t realize was their’s.)

Anyhow, the reason being, many years ago Kellogg’s brought a lawsuit against a local Steel Drum Band by the name of the “Toucans”. http://www.toucans.net. The band was applying for a Trademark of their Toucan logo, and “Big K” thought people would confuse it with “Toucan Sam” of Froot Loops fame.

Now, I admit I was biased, because they are a great Band, and I first saw the them when they were still a fairly new band and the members were literally (teenage) kids. They are now in their thirties! =:-o

Now, I could kinda understand if the cereal name was “Toucans” or the band chose the name “Froot Loops”, but I was appalled and offended that this big corp had lawyers with nothing better to do than go after a small entity like this Band, with a very vague, at best, in my opinion, claim that this was somehow an infringement.

The history of the suit, and the Toucans’ victory (Yay!!) can be found here: http://www.toucans.net/Trademark/LegalIndex.html.

Just can’t believe how long ago the suit was brought on, and, how long ago it was settled (though it was a several year process.)

Some of you may have a heart attack on this one, but I don’t see why weed isn’t legal.

In my opinion, all smoking is nasty as hell but I don’t believe weed should be any more illegal than cigarettes (and for the record, I’ve never smoked it). If you want to smoke it in your own home, go for it.

It’s also comical that salvia is much more potent a plant than marijuana and it is perfectly legal. If you ever want some good laughs, search salvia on youtube!

what I find amazing is the double standard in sports…first, we have Michael Phelps doing what a lot of young people are doing…yes, illegal, but.. we can all agree that it shouldn’t be illegal. And he looses endorsements, suspended for 3 months…etc. etc. Then we have Mr. Alex Rodriguez. Illegal steroids, lying, cheating to get ahead in his sport, simply saying I’m sorry, and he’s forgiven, let him play, make all those millions, be revered by the fans…give me a break…

oh, and , yes, I inhaled ;-) – just thought I’d throw it in there – lol…it’s great especially during chemo..:)

This is hilarious – the anti-Kellogg’s petitions have made CNN! Apparently, when you call Kellogg’s, the voice recording that answers says, “Thank you for calling the Kellogg Company. If you would like to share your comments regarding our relationship with Michael Phelps, please press one to speak with a representative.”

Seth Meyers, thank you for saying EXACTLY what I was thinking: http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/really-michael-phelps/999101/

Oh. And. BTW. Is there any greater example of a company crapping in its own nest like KELLOGS alienating the STONERS?! Weed and cereal is like peanut butter and jelly for god’s sake.

Its absurd the cops raided the house with guns drawn looking for a bong and pot, and arrested 8 seeking a rat on Phelps. Our Finest at work.
