Senator Joe McDermott voted Yes over the weekend to extend local excise taxes bill 6116 to help rebuild Husky Stadium.

    This is a link to contact Joe McDermott directly;

I think it is crazy that they have voted in favor to extend the taxes used to build Safeco Field and Qwest Stadium. We recently voted this last fall to create a new tax to help update the infrastructure on Pike Place Market and this money could have been used for this. But

instead we created a whole new tax for this.

Please contact Senator Joe McDermott and express you opinion of him favoring extending this taxe for Bill 6116.

Please explain. The bill has the word “stadium” in it, that’s true, but as far as I can tell that’s the only thing you can be basing this on.

It would potentially include all publicly owned stadiums and arenas in the city.

I think the Husky stadium is in pretty bad shape and some one is going to have to pay for it. If the tourist who pay for hotel rooms and rental cars can pay for (half)the renovations as well as all the other benefits in the bill, why should I object?

If you have anything more coherent to back your point, then whip it out.

That would be a potential yes for Key Arena too, so that the Center can be updated. Better concerts, circus, ice shows, and other events for the Key. It is a tourism tax extension, and if you look at the speed at which Qwest and Safeco gets paid off, its a smart investment in jobs and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Ask the folks doing business on QA how the Key has restricted their business this last year.

Sen. Joe McDermott’s priorities are definitely not in line with our district. The guy has got to go.

I contacted his office to vote No against SB 5127; an anti-conservation bill that would have removed the ability of the WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife to protect our natural resources. I never received a response and he voted in favor. Thankfully, the House had some sense and it never passed out of committee.

Let the people speak with a vote for Key Arena or The Husky Stadium. But I do not trust the politicians, they will vote based on what lobbyist want them to think, since they pay their bills. Let the tax expire, enough is enough.

The Huskies are trying to build a 300 million dollar stadium. No college has ever spent that much money, and it certainly was not used from public tax dollars!

Many people have voiced their opinions in this matter to their senators, and they still voted the other way.

    Represent your people!

The people speak when they elect a representative. And Jowe won by a very wide margin, didn’t he?

There are lobbyists on both sides of every bill that is considered, so it can’t be true that politicians do only what lobbyists want them to do.

    b) After the bonds issued for the construction of the baseball stadium are retired, the revenue from the taxes imposed under the authority of this section must be deposited in the special purposes account under section 6 of this act.

Hmmm, special purposes account and who gets to decide where this money is spent?

I not saying its not going to be spent on other projects through out Seattle and King County. The bulk of this money $150 million of it going to Husky Stadium.

“The University of Washington wants to renovate and upgrade Husky Stadium with help … on the proposal to ask the state Legislature for $150 million in public … The $150 million from the state would essentially rebuild the lower bowl”

Google it, this last part was in the Seattle times.

is there a reason why two threads had to be started on this particular subject? I’m just curious…and I’m really curious what dirkb has against Husky Stadium, UW, etc. I’m not sayin’ I’m for the renovatin’…it hasn’t been approved yet, now, has it? And for those who think it’s a slam dunk, that they always get what they ask for…well, the economy is different now…maybe not.

Technically there’s nothing wrong with starting two posts on the same subject. Although I might suggest that it might be a good idea for the originator of this and the other thread to pick one and stay with it just for the sake of continuity and time management for all involved.

    JanS,

I have a problem with local tax dollars going to support a the most expensive Stadium renovation in college sports in the country. They can support them selves, they just raised 2.3 billion dollars and didn’t allocate any of it for there stadium. Now they want $150 million from King County and the State.

This bill won’t go to the people for a vote, It already passed in the Senate Committee for Ways and Means(this is where Joe voted for it) and now it is going to the Senate and Reps.

So if you don’t support this bill then you need to contact Joe McDermott on the link at the top.

this is great news. as someone who is now unemployed due to the downturn in construction jobs, its nice to see the state and city realize that investment in the local infrastructure is worth investing in.

As far as the tax, it may affect me a few dollars a year, but worth it to see hundreds of jobs made available… glad that the politicos aren’t bowing down to the can’t do crowd this time.

You know, maybe this might fall under education and construction of infrastructure under the stimulus package?

Cynical Rich: Gee, I might get taxed locally and federally (if the above situation came to fruition).

Husky Fan Rich: Let’s make it the Stadium Gem of the PAC-10 AND of the Emerald City. Waterfront property. Great tradition. Revenues support all other sports on campus.

Eastern Washington Rich: Hey aren’t the Cougars paying for their own upgrades? Damn Westsiders

West Seattle Rich: When is the monorail going to built so that I can ride it to the game?

    All joking aside:

Jamminj you might have a point about jobs.

as an aside… I don’t care who gets the $$$ UW or WSU, all I want is jobs to be able to go to. or even key arena (seattle center)… you have to admit, the center is a dump – could use a renovation.
