maeMemberLast night at about 10:30, there was an extremely loud bang behind my 38th Ave. SW home. It almost sounded like a wall falling down. Does anyone have any information as to what this strange sound was?

WSBKeymasterSeveral people e-mailed us to ask. I checked at the time; there were no 911 calls at that time and nothing unusual on the police scanner; I believe it was probably one of the larger types of illegal explosives that people fire off this time of year (M-80, etc.) – we heard loud bangs a few times in the past few days … TR

AnonymousInactiveI don’t know where on 38th Ave. you are, but on my street, at 35th Ave, at the north end, neighbors were letting off fireworks, about 3 or 4 houses north of us.
They were doing this around 8 or 9 in the evening. A couple that they let off were very large (almost looked like professional ones) and very loud.
So, if you are at the north end, that is probably what you heard.

jMemberI live on 41st in the Morgan Junction area and heard the sound around 10:30 too. It was VERY loud. Didn’t really sound like a firework because it seemed to have a deeper sound, but I guess it could have been since the 4th was a few days ago.

PSPSParticipantI’m two blocks west of you, Mae, and I heard one of those at precisely 10:53 PM. Since there’s a hill between you ane me, it’s unlikely it was the same one. So I presume someone was walking down the alleys and lighting off M-80’s. Mine rattled the windows so hard I thought some would break.

PSPSParticipantOn second thought, I would have heard something at least “in the distance” with all these other reports from nearby.
Maybe we all heard the same thing and it was a sonic boom. Those can be deafening.

changingtimesMemberim on 42nd in the junction and i heard this sound as well, checked the blog, no bombs dropped on westseattle, concluded it was just a firework, my dogs were not happy campers, they spent the rest of the night under the bed.

AnonymousInactiveI should put this in the rants section, but I really, really hate personal fireworks. They’re mostly just loud and annoying.
