    Hi,

I am trying to legally get my name changed. Where is the closest office to get a new license? Where is the closest Soc. Security office?

    Thanks!

Are you changing your name to “AlkiGirl”? :-)

There are two DOL offices close- if I remember right, you work downtown- there’s an office at 205 Spring St: https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/dolprod/dsdoffices/officeinfo.aspx?cid=583&oid=24

There’s also a DOL office in West Seattle at 8830 25th Ave SW: https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/dolprod/dsdoffices/officeinfo.aspx?cid=583&oid=30

You can find a social security office here:

I’m glad you asked this b/c I have to do the name change thing soon so it gave me a head start!

There’s an office for S.S. in Burien at 151 SW 156th St and one downtown at 9th and Lenora, 901 Lenora.

Both use the same toll free number 800 772-1213.

If you are talking about Drivers License, then the Westwood office is probably your closest. You simply take with you $10 and proof of your name change. Don’t forget to change your name on your car’s registration too.

When you successfully negotiate the name change, could you post a “summary?” For some reason, I supposedly have to go to court to get an official change – if that’s true, it’s the only state where I couldn’t just call myself whatever I wanted, as long as I wasn’t perpetrating a fraud.

now, Charlabob, what will you call yourself next?

Um, I’m trying to *legally* call myself by my current name — which I’ve used for 20 years and, only in Washington, have I been “threatened” with court. Didn’t used to be a problem, but with the Patriot Act, I sometimes need to have ID that matches my name. I suppose that’s why they call it “ID” :-)

Thanks everyone. I am attempting to take a half day this afternoon to get everything accomplished. I will let you know what I face. And thanks for the reminder about the car registration.

Charla, my understanding is that if you are just taking your husband/wife’s last name you do not need to go to the court. what you need to do is get a certified copy your marriage license and go change your soc & drivers license. Once you have these changed banks, doctors, work, etc will take your new soc card & drivers license as proof.

However, if you are going to have any other name change (changing first names or both parties creating a new last name etc) you will have to go through the courts legal process which can be found here:

Thanks, for the info, BDG — and especially for the link. Looks like I’m going to have to make a date with a court.

I hope its not too late, but I’d check the wait times online before you head down to the offices. Those DOL offices can be a nightmare at times (waits of well over an hour.)

    Good luck!

EmmyJane, just thought I’d share some advice I got when I was getting married and would be changing my name, and it was very helpful to me:

Start making a list of everything that comes to you that has your name on it that will need to be changed. It was amazing how many things like magazines, memberships, etc. needed to be changed in addition to the obvious bills, license, social security, etc. Then, once I had a list, I would call each one and explain that I’d be changing my name soon, and what would I need to do to change it in their records. Some just needed a phone call or email. Others needed a signed letter. Others needed an official marriage certificate. Making this list was very helpful because then I also knew how many official certificates I needed to purchase, had the letters already written and ready to go, etc. Made things much easier when it came time to change my name!

Half-way done! (Yes, great idea, Sue.:))

Just as an FYI to you EmmyJane, you will need your parents social security card numbers to fill out the application for a new card. Slowed me down yesterday. :) You can find the card application here:

    http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

Other things to remember to switch over:

    insurances, voter registration, passport etc.

Good luck & nice memory about where I work. ;)

    Have a great Wednesday!!!

I just realized that my “manufactured” name is the hyphenated combination of my mother’s and father’s surnames so those are actually the names on my birth certificate. I was making it too complicated, getting old marriage license and divorce certificate and … I called licensing and social security and they said my birth certificate is all I need. Duh, and thank you, BDG, for getting me started on this long overdue project.
