pattileaParticipantLast evening about 8:20 PM two girls came to my door selling candy. I thought it was a bit late for them to be out. I asked what organization they were selling for and they said Federal Way High School. Thinking something was up, I said oh the high school down the street, The older girl about 14 said yes. Now knowing this was wrong, I asked if they were with a caravan. They said yes, and I asked them if they were safe, and if they were eating. The younger girl about 12, started to say that she was tired, and then the older girl gave her a hard look. She said they need to go. I just felt something was wrong. I called 911, and followed them to where the van was parked with about 12 kids in it. Knowing the police were on their way, I stood in front of the van so it couldn’t leave. The driver threatened to run me over, but I needed to know they were safe. The police came, and said they were from Florida. They said it was legal. Although it’s legal doesn’t make it right. My wild child got caught up in a caravan when he was about 17. They didn’t pay them and deducted food money, and if they didn’t sell enough they were shunned. He was dumped in eastern Washington, with no money. I am just curios how this can be legal.

JanSParticipantPattilea, thank you for what you did, even if it was to no avail. Yes, how can that be legal. I see it as a form of child abuse. You put yourself in harms way to help out. So glad the driver didn’t hurt you. Sometimes “our hands are tied” simply doesn’t do it for me. Glad you tried to help.

wakefloodParticipantHmmm…I bought some candy from a kid a few weeks back. He had lots of quality documentation (I checked all of it), the school was local and he seemed genuinely friendly and unintimidated.
I HOPE I didn’t support one of these messed up enterprises??
Thanks for the head’s up. I’ll be even more skeptical in the future.

pattileaParticipantI usually support kids selling things. Lord knows my kids did their share of selling door to door. But this just seemed wrong. Maybe Mothers intuition.

datamuseParticipantThose traveling crews are bad news. They are legal in Washington, though they aren’t supposed to employ anyone under the age of 16 without a variance from L&I. If you got the name of the outfit you could check with L&I to see if they had a variance, but that’s about all.
Kids selling door to door are prohibited in some states–including Florida, ironically–and much more strictly regulated in others. I agree that it’s messed up.

StarskyParticipantThat should not be legal. Good work stoping the van!!

happywalkerParticipant12 years old, does that sound odd to anyone else…,not just the fact that they are selling candy door to door. How do they live, where do they go school? Where are their parents/family. Is the “company” from Florida or are the kids from Florida? So many questions… Did the cops check any paperwork or the kids age etc

happywalkerParticipantAnd the cops said it’s legal, what’s legal? Sounds fishy to me. Who are the “grown ups”? What do they do with the money collected?

4th of EightParticipantPattilea…. YOU ARE AWESOME! That is what a heroic act is. Not doing something spur of the moment instinct and adrenalin, but thinking it out and still putting yourself in harms way. Thankyou! (Hope those kids all bust out of the van all at once and have someone get ‘Jesse Jones’ for them!!!)

JoBParticipantbeing legal doesn’t make it right
and one would wonder why children’s protective services wouldn’t be called for the 12 year old
