miwsParticipantI’ve (thankfully) never smoked, so don’t have any firsthand advice, but want to congratulate you, and wish you the best of luck in this, M.

2 Much WhineParticipantWhat works for one person may not work for another but when you said you’re only smoking one a day or less it made me want to say “so you haven’t quit, have you?” I quit 16 years ago and have not touched tobacco in any form since then. I know I can’t because I’ll surely start up again if I do. What it took for me was to tell myself that I am a non-smoker. Non-smokers don’t “just have one puff.” Non-smokers don’t have cravings. That’s what I had to do to convince myself that if I truly was to become a non-smoker I had to behave like one. After repeated attempts to quit my pack a day habit (some lasting 6 months or more) I realized my personality type doesn’t allow the occasional cig. I have friends that could buy one pack a year and smoke them all in a weekend and it’s no big deal. It’s not fair but that doesn’t work for me. I might have one and be fine, then 6 weeks later I’ll think it’s no big deal then have another and then three weeks and then I’d buy a pack and be a smoker again. Now, 16 years later, I’m finally shedding some of the pounds I put on when I quit – but I am a non-smoker. Hope you are successful in your endeavor.

celeste17ParticipantDon’t work the customer service counter where all the cigarettes are in plain site. I would think that would be a temptation.

kootchmanMemberDo things that are in conflict. There was a day, whilst riding with friends… ( I carried a pack in my butt pack) when I reached the top of Avalon … I had a choice. Be a bike rider or be a smoker. It was more fun to be a bike rider.

mojiMemberCongratulations on your decision, and to your health!
Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I love the fact that there will be one less person making stinky air in WS :)
I smoked about a pack a day for 6 years before quitting. I’m one of the lucky ones, cold turkey was really pretty easy for me. But when someone told me about cutting up some drinking straws to the length of cigarettes, that made all the difference in the world. Then I could carry one around between my fingers or sit on the couch and hold it while talking on the phone, etc. without feeling like something was missing, you know? Hypnosis has helped me kick some other habits, and I highly recommend considering that if you continue to struggle.
Good Luck! You deserve it and YOU CAN DO IT!!

SJoyParticipantGreat job!!! Keep it up… remember – you never want to go through this again so might as well just stay quit – that’s what is working for me :-)

TanDLParticipantAwesome job, HunterG! You can do anything!

casabobaMemberCongratulations! Keep making the good-choice not to smoke one day at a time. Soon you will be smoke-free like me for (approx.) 4,386 days. The cravings & nervous energy will subside over time. I wish you continued success…

HunterGParticipantJust want to thank you all again for your encouragement and advice, I haven’t smoked since I started this thread and I used every trick each of you recommended!

2 Much WhineParticipantRight on! 5 months? That’s AWESOME and WONDERFUL! You’re over the hardest hump! For me the cravings still came for about 10 years (although with decreasing frequency) – just don’t give in because, as SJoy said, you don’t want to go through that again! They say it is harder to quit nicotine than heroin.

LindseyParticipantCongrats! Think of all the money you’ve saved and TREAT YO SELF. My habit cost me about $200 a month, so I buy myself a fabulous handbag or pair of shoes every year on my quitting anniversary. I’m worth it, you’re worth it, our beautiful pink lungs are worth it.

SJoyParticipantCongrats!!!! Isn’t it great being smokefree!!! I know that sometimes it’s still hard – I’m in my 8th month, but it’s sooo worth it!
Good for you and keep up the good work!

365StairsParticipantWay to go HunterG! Have you saved $ (paid yourself) or re-purposed your $ towards the greater good of HunterG?

hammerheadParticipantWell I have never been a smoker so I have no words of advice, but I certainly wish you luck.:)

shed22ParticipantProof it can be done! Right on! I stopped smoking a year ago. I am now addicted to nicotine patches, but not smoking. Keep it up!

HunterGParticipantThe money I saved I spent on my trip to Iceland. Keep at it shed22, and congrats Sjoy!
