Jail in West Seattle?

Ok. Me too. I’m very, very active on this issue gambaru. I mean, in a big way. What kind of information are you seeking?

Is it a done deal? What is the exact location? Are there alternatives to a West Seattle/White Center location? What are the possible ramifications for our neighborhood and property value?

We bought in this area for a million reasons including it being a family friendly neighborhood and a long term investment. On both fronts I am extremely concerned.

Well, ignoring the fact that policymakers are oh-so-fickle in that bureaucratic kind of way, I will venture to answer your question with an optimistic, but not completely unreasonable no – it is not a done deal gamburu.

The city has proposed four misdemeanor jail sites for the entire city. One in Interbay between Queen Anne and Magnolia, one on Aurora Ave where the Puetz Golf Range now stands and two of the sites are here. There is one site to the north at the intersection of West Marginal Way and Highland Park Way and there is another site at Meyer’s Way just south of where the Public Storage facility is on Roxbury.

There are also two other city jail site feasibility studies being conducted within King County. One for a group of cities called the JAG, which are the north and east cities such as Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland all through the eastern part of the county up to the Snohomish County line. And, there is another siting study being conducted by the southern group of cities (SCORE) which include every city from Renton down to the Pierce County line.

Now, you have asked a million dollar question regarding possible ramifications for our neighborhoods. Addressing those concerns for this area, as well as the larger bird’s eye view of this issue is the Highland Park Action Committee, Their website is highlandpk.net. You can find a ton of information and links, when meetings are and what you can do until the meetings.

WSB has been covering this issue and has created a category tab on the side bar of the front page of WSB entitled “West Seattle Jail Sites”. It contains most of the stories WSB has done on this issue and those stories are loaded with links to the city website set up to address this.

This is a profoundly difficult thing to go through gamburu, for all of us who live here. I want you to know that there are very active and very concerned neighbors of yours who are at this very moment working their butts off to get information to folks who live here. We have been working on this nonstop. This is a challenge to the future of all of our communities on both sides of Roxbury. Please go look at the HPAC website and the WSB “WS Jail sites tab” and educate and update yourself on what has transpired.

Remember. None of us are going through this alone. It’s a crappy way to meet others in our community, but I will tell you gamburu, there are some really, really incredible folks living in these neighborhoods. How folks rise to meet life’s challenges and do it not only for themselves but for their neighbors and do it with integrity and compassion is an inspiration to me. My neighbors are friggin’ superheroes. And, they are your neighbors too. So, join us.
