Synergy3kMemberGreetings! Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I’m hoping you all might be able to point me in the right direction. I’ve got an old running injury that isn’t going to heal without surgery and have been told that biking and swimming would be my better options. I like to be outdoors as much as possible, so I’m hoping to get a bike. But I have no idea where to start, and not a lot of $$$ to throw around. Does anyone have recs for a store to check out, and anything I should know to get started? Any pointers would be much appreciated!

clark5080ParticipantCan’t remember the name of the store but there is a store that mainly sells used bikes that is on the north end of Lake Union between stone way and Gasworks park
Just found it

JeffroMemberI’ll second Recycled Cycles. I like Montlake Bikes and Gregg’s on Greenlake a lot too. They all have excellent selection. You’ll probably spend less money at Recycled, plus you’ll have a good chance at finding a nice used bike that suits your needs.

YardvarkMemberWest Seattle has (at least) two great bike shops that I know of and they are both on California.
There’s Alki Bike & Board in Admiral and Aaron’s in Morgan. Either one of them would be able to help you out.
Great owners and staff at both places.

AlParticipantBike Works over in Columbia City is also a great place to look for a bike. However, unless you know what you are looking for and the correct size of bike for what you need, I’d recommend Alki Bike & Board. They were amazingly helpful when I needed a new bike and had a budget to stick with – and the service has been consistently great.

Garden_nymphMemberI haven’t been there yet, but there is also Cycle University on Fauntleroy.

dawsonctParticipantA warning about Aaron’s: unless you are an obvious expert cyclist and have led at least one stage of a professional cycling event, preferably in Europe, you WILL be treated with undisguised disdain by Aaron.
His employees all seem to be nice, but Aaron himself seems to have serious problems with customer relations.

ToolShareMemberIf you’re interested in biking in West Seattle, you probably want to stop by the Sustainable West Seattle Bike Event tomorrow night up at South Seattle Community College.
http://www.sustainablewestseattle.org/2010/05/sws-may-community-forum-electric-bikes/
SWS will have representatives there from Alki Bike & Board as well as West Seattle Spokespeople – which is a local bicycling group aimed at helping novice riders get started. They’ll also be demonstrations on basic bike maintainence and a lot of information on electric bikes.
It starts at 7pm at the future site of the West Seattle Tool Library, 6000 16th Ave SW (North side of campus by the Garden Center).
I’ll be there.
