DBPMemberThis is my tovarisch, Karl.

He lives in the Cottage Grove neighborhood.*
Some of you might already know Karl. Especially if you’re a garden freak.
Or a bamboo freak.
Or just a plain old freak-freak.
*****************************************************************************************
I met Karl one fine day last summer, while I was trespassing on his property. From a distance I thought the place was some kind a temple, so I decided to investigate.
Why did I think it was a temple? I dunno. Maybe it was the mystical bamboo forest. Or maybe it was the prayer banners at the gate, flapping gaily in the breeze.
Or maybe it was just cuz.
***************************************************************************************
Hallooooooo!!!! I called out from the edge of the forest.
Hallooooooo . . .
[ . . . ]
Halloooooo, someone called back.
Can I talk to the head monk? I hollered.
There’s no monks here. It’s just me. Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?
****************************************************************************************
So that’s how it all got started. That’s how I met Karl.
[TBC]
*Would you like to know where Cottage Grove is? Well then . . . why don’t you just look it up?

DBPMemberI told Karl about my plan to live off the land — anybody’s — and he said he’d do what he could.
He promised to let me know when the bamboo shoots came up this year, so I could harvest some for eating.
Two weeks ago he called me over and together we excavated a dozen prime specimens.

DBPMemberNow, personally, I don’t know much about cooking bamboo. In fact, I don’t know anything about cooking bamboo.
But as luck would have it, there’s a Cambodian lady who lives with me (my wife) and she knows a thing or two about bamboo.

Yessir. Just a thing or two about bamboo . . .

DBPMemberSo far we’ve had it in curry and stir-fry.
Exquisite!
Tomorrow, I might just eat some plain, because that’s how much I love it.
**************************************************************************************
Friends, would you like to have your own locally grown and fresh-out-of-the-ground bamboo?
Well then, why don’t you just go and get you a Cambodian lady to live with? And why don’t you just go and get you a friend like Karl?
That’s what I did.

I grow some black bamboo and trade it to my friends in the summer for beer.
