inactiveMemberI don’t know where to start to look for residential generators. I an uncertain what type or size and at what costs. But I was without power or heat this AM. I have repressed
memory of same for five days in 2006 and enough is enough. I thought maybe I could share power:costs with neighbs if needed.
TIA.

BreezyParticipantWe recently had Eric & Kurt from Washington Electric install a 11 KW Generac standby generator. It worked like a champ this morning – we had 3 outages, the first one lasting nearly 2 hours. The whole thing was reasonably priced and a real comfort knowing that when the power goes out, we’re set.

trickycooljParticipantI don’t think they’re worth it in the SCL service area. When you’re talking hours long outages and you don’t have a specific medical need the hassle is probably not worth it. Food in the freezer stays safe for 24-hours. Now where my mom lives in rural Thurston County in PSE territory where they can’t keep up with all the repairs her outages are measured in multiple DAYS. She can’t store long term food in the freezer because every single year there is a days long event that spoils all of the food without a generator. And outages are probably every few months. In Seattle, it’s maybe a 5+ year event. And just more junk to store in the garage and fuel up. And if outages are far and wide enough when you run out if gas you can’t pump more at a gas station with power out.

Yes, that several days in 2006 was a bit rough, but also quite rare, and was seven years ago. A day, or partial day, or so, once in a while, I can handle. I would give an expenditure of that magnitude a bit more time to see if you really need it. I believe City Light has made improvements to minimize the longer power outages. They did perform rather extensive tree clearing after the major outages.
I would give it more time. I have been generally satisfied with the few number of significant power outages in the West Seattle area.
But of course, I am not in your shoes.
