missaudreyhorneParticipantSome of you may know, but my mother (forum frequenter and West Seattlite, JanS) has a rare form of kidney disease and has been undergoing treatment for it for many months. She is now in “end stage renal disease”, meaning she will need a transplant, and soon. Her blood type is the second most rare, meaning a search for a kidney donor from a stranger may take years, but with any luck, I’ll be giving her one of mine since we are the same blood type.
Now, those of you who know my mom know that she has had an extremely rough go health-wise over the last 15 years, including (but not limited to) pancreatitis and complications from it, breast cancer, double hip replacement surgeries and diabetes. This kidney disease is seemingly unrelated to any of these previous illnesses. Not to mention her car being stolen from a local mechanic and completely picked apart so that we had to have it junked. Needless to say, we’ve been through a lot. I’m so grateful to the many friends we have in West Seattle that have helped us throughout the years, but now I’m again pleading for your help.
Since she is self employed as a massage therapist, taking off the amount of time needed for recovery from such a surgery will take a great financial toll on her that I can’t by myself help out with. Also, it has already been a great strain on her finances since she often hasn’t felt up to working as she is very ill and also had to undergo chemotherapy. If that weren’t enough, before she has surgery she must have a lot of dental work to prevent future infection after the surgery, and the heavy expenses aren’t covered by her insurance.
So, to help with bills, we are participating in tomorrow’s West Seattle Garage Sale Day with all proceeds going to the “kidney fun” for my mother (#204 on the map, 9843 42nd Ave SW in Arbor Heights). I have set up an account for the fund with a reputable online savings website called Smarty Pig, and we are asking for those of you who have a little extra or who aren’t able to make it to our sale. Trust me when I say we are doing everything we can to also obtain any social services that she is qualified for throughout this process, and that while helpful suggestions are appreciated, we are definitely looking into other options for her bills. But anything right now would be of great assistance. It is difficult to ask for help, and I hope no one would fault someone for doing it when they truly need it.
