As I recall, we had a google group (?) for the hard-core participants in the locksmith fundraiser. It wasn’t exclusionary — just allowed details to be ground out without boring all 10K forum readers and lurkers. Maybe we should do that and everyone who wants can sign up?

I actually don’t think it should be cut off after the original announcement — but I’m a freedom of speech and typing freak. Just think what newbies will miss. :-)

TR I agree. I think we just need a general announcement about the potluck and fundraiser and have it as a sticky so everyone can see the date and decide if they want to come or not. Thank You

I agree with Celeste. I think the vitriolic comments might discourage some forum members from joining in on the meet-up. That’s a bad formula for a meet-up with a cause… two worthy causes.

well, no worries. I won’t be attending. Wouldn’t want to put anyone off by being honest and calling out BS. Have fun y’all, and I will try to drop off a donation with someone to take for the FFF.

Well pshaw! I wanted to meet the JenV behind the clown avatar. I wasn’t referring to myself being intimidated; but I thought others might be.

I just realized that the potluck time conflicts with a benefit concert my high school senior is organizing! If anyone wants to wander over to Grace Church at 2:30 we’d love to have you join us :)! Otherwise, I’d love to be at the potluck and hope you have a huge turnout and lots of fun!

Too bad WSMom. I guess it goes with the “mom” territory. There will be others!

Thanks for correcting me about the RIFC 2/12 fundraiser. Still not used to noticing 2008 vs 2009. :-p

Just wanted to add a comment about the charitable donations aspect. It used to be that you only needed receipts (“proof”) for contributions over $250, but now it’s required to have proof for contributions of ANY amount. I don’t know when this started, but it was at least 2008 (maybe earlier) and likely will continue for 2009. :-)

alki-2008 the nice thing is that a credit card statement/bank statement will work as “proof”!

Yep – bank statements, credit card statements, cancelled checks, and acknowledegment letters from the organization as well.

The whole paperless banking makes it tougher though…have to remember to go and print the cancelled check image before it gets beyond the “free viewing” period. Ugh!

I went ahead and pulled some ‘accurate’ info from the IRS site:

“Under a new recordkeeping rule effective for all cash, check, electronic funds transfers, credit card charges, or other monetary contributions of any amount made in taxable years beginning after August 17, 2006, the donor must obtain and keep a bank record or a written communication from the donee as a record of the contribution.

Written records prepared by the donor (such as check registers or personal notations) are no longer sufficient to support charitable contributions.

Bank records for this recordkeeping requirement include bank or credit union statements, canceled checks, or credit card statements.

A donor claiming a deduction of $250 or more is also required to obtain and keep a contemporaneous written acknowledgment for a charitable contribution.”

    Excerpted from here: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=96102,00.html

This makes the donee’s job a lot more troublesome. Thanks to the people that are going to keep track of all this. If it’s possible to contribute to the chosen organizations online with credit card, then please post along with the ‘official’ announcement of the event. :)
