Recently I’ve been seeing pictures appear on the blog showing people out fishing. I’ve had an interest in taking up the hobby, but have little knowledge about the sport.

I guess my real question is, where are these people fishing from? Are they out on Alki beach and what kind of fish are they catching? Is it safe to eat the fish around here? I’ve been thinking about doing a salmon charter, but being able to spend evenings fishing in the area would be nice too…

    Thanks!

Hi – I’m not a fishing person myself but I can tell you more about the locations of the two photos we featured recently – Seacrest Pier is the one right by the Water Taxi dock. The one we showed last night is on the beach at Lincoln Park. We often see people fishing at Lincoln Park, especially on the north-facing beach (which is just east of where that photo was taken). Regarding whether the fish are safe to eat, you might get different views on that – certainly there’s no question local waters are polluted, but as one commenter pointed out, the salmon are migrating from the open ocean. I’d look this all up if I wasn’t jamming on something else with a deadline before I go out to take some pix, but googling elliott bay fish health or a phrase like that might offer up some info, before anybody with even better knowledge answers this … thanks! the salmon are migratory and are not particularly subject to local water quality

Lots of fishing opportunities but please check regulations as they are complicated for fishing the salt and may even be different from Seacrest to Lincoln Park.

Do yourself a favor and make the extra effort and take up fly fishing from the start.

Dept. of Health press release on eating fish from Puget Sound (from 2006 but conditions haven’t really improved since then):

I would definitely avoid eating bottomfish from Elliott Bay. Recall that most of the lower Duwamish is a patchwork of Superfund toxic cleanup sites, and the toxins are all in the sediment, where the bottomfish live and eat.

Generally speaking, you can avoid a lot of the toxic load in wild fish by avoiding the fat and skin when you eat them.

More info on where to fish for salmon and fishing regulations here: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/salmon/when_where.htm
