Sharon610ParticipantI was running yesterday & came upon an EV being charged. The vehicle was on the parking strip side of the sidewalk and the owner had plugged in the charging cord so that it crossed the sidewalk somewhere between waist & knee height. I was running just before dusk, but if it had been any later I wouldn’t have seen the cord, would have tripped over it and potentially injured myself very badly. (I have a photo but can’t figure out how to post it here.) It was there again today.
EV owners, please ensure that your charging cords do not create a hazard for pedestrians, runners, people using mobility devices, children on bicycles, those pushing strollers or anyone else using public sidewalks.
During the holidays many people have extension cords strung across sidewalks but most of them place the cord at ground level and put a mat over it to prevent people from tripping. Perhaps that could be a solution for EV owners.

SueParticipantDid you knock on their door or leave a note at the house or on the car? I’m wondering if it’s possible they don’t even realize. Maybe when they plug it into the car the cord is flat on the sidewalk and by the time they stretch it to the outlet they may not realize it has risen up into the air. Seems like a better chance of them seeing a note or having a conversation with them then hoping that they read it on a random blog forum post.

anonymeParticipantI think Sharon was making a general comment to EV users, rather than trying to warn a specific individual. It should be noted that this practice is not only hazardous but illegal. If a note doesn’t work, just unplug the damn thing. Maybe someone leaving for work only to find a dead engine waiting would get the message across. This could also be reported to SDOT, as it involves blocking a sidewalk.

mark47nParticipantI’m a believer of solving the problem directly: unplug the car thus removing the hazard.
