argilesParticipantEveryone has been on the topic of Admiral Ways speeding sting lately. But I have never seen a post about the speeding on Avalon, has anyone noticed that the cars and emergency vehicles go extremely fast on this street at all hours of the day everyday!
It’s already extremely dangerous for us/ anyone who lives on it (Avalon) to make a left or right turn out on to the street due to the parking on the side of the street and the people who fly up and down the hill. All I can say is that I must have one heck of a guardian angel keeping me safe.
But the slight curve of the road near Genesee where people are constantly crossing the road to get to the bus stops certainly brings up some concern, especially when fire trucks/ and cop cars are screaming down the road. Yes, I understand that they need to get to the actual emergency but at what risk. The fire trucks actually have their sirens on more then the cops who just give it a whoop whoop. Someone is going to get killed one of these days.
As someone who lives on Avalon Way- this is my opinion

JustSarahParticipantHa! I love that it’s the cars turning from the side streets you’re concerned about. As someone who lives on Avalon, just a bit west of the big Genesee hill, I can tell you that we pedestrians have the most to worry about — but I have never been concerned with emergency vehicles. They make their presence known, with sirens wailing and lights flashing. Plus, the presence of cops is sometimes the only thing that makes other drivers stop to actually let us bus commuters and pedestrians cross the street. Each morning, I walk from my building northeast on Avalon 1.5 blocks to the downtown-bound bus stop. Each morning, I gingerly step off that curb to cross Genesee, as inevitably there’s a driver flying up the hill toward Avalon, ready to whip a turn in either direction without paying any attention to who might be crossing the street. As I wait for the bus, I watch those unlucky people who have to actually contend with crossing Avalon; the crosswalk is marked, yet generally five cars pass in either direction before anyone actually stops. My husband works in SoDo and thus takes a 21 or 22 home each day and also has to contend with crossing Avalon at that crosswalk; a few weeks ago an officer in a marked car stopped for him first. He was halfway across when he realized a driver heading the opposite direction was not planning to stop… until that cop flashed his lights and the guy took notice. Otherwise, though? So many drivers along there just don’t care.
Sorry for the rant. I agree with you, but worry so much more about pedestrians and bicyclists than auto drivers. People drive like idiots along here.

argilesParticipantMy post was intended to make it more of a known subject. I too live on Avalon and have to make the trek across the road to get to the bus and if I so choose to leave in my car to go somewhere turning out on to Avalon from my apartment garage is a nightmare.
But I agree that pedestrians and bicycles are at risk as well.
I edited my post a little bit to point out that I do live on the street (Avalon as well)
