JanSParticipanthe probably would blow smoke in his 3 yr. old child’s face, too..:(
August 16, 2009 at 6:02 pm #674866
GenHillOneParticipantI’d like to see the dog pee in his face while he’s sleeping.
August 16, 2009 at 6:40 pm #674867
bluebirdMemberMaybe the dog has cancer.
Side note: Hempfest website says no dogs allowed. Entrance is single file, wonder how he even got in.
August 16, 2009 at 6:53 pm #674868
GenHillOneParticipantIt also says that smoking isn’t allowed either, but…
August 16, 2009 at 7:15 pm #674869
bluebirdMemberIt’s a little more difficult to hide a big dog in your pocket.
I didn’t realize there was so little info on this topic. Besides stating it’s bad, they really offer nothing more than anecdotal evidence (vet visits, no research) of toxicity involving large amounts of ingested pot. Often in the form of baked goods.
I would think someone would be interested in second hand smoke of any variety, on pets.

JenVMember“no dogs allowed at Hempfest”? coulda fooled me. we saw tons of dogs there yesterday.
August 16, 2009 at 7:31 pm #674871
GenHillOneParticipantI guess my point was that I don’t know how strict the staff was on any of the rules.
It does bother me the dog doesn’t have the ability to make the same choices as its human. When he can choose to light up himself, I may look at it differently ;)
And before the thread spins wildly out of control, yes, I’m aware that this theory can be applied to all sorts of things. Just trying to stay on topic.

Knitten_KittenMemberThat is so disgusting. This is (part of) the reason I hate smokers so much. I have a friend who knows a guy who does that to his cats allll the time. She thinks its funny, and that if the cats didn’t like it they would run away…. You can tell she’s killed a brain cell or two
August 16, 2009 at 7:38 pm #674873
JenVMemberthe so called “staff” at Hempfest couldn’t see any dogs, because of their heads being so far up their asses.
for the record, this is horrible abuse to an animal, and hopefully Knitten_Kitten your friend doesn’t ever feed weed to the kitty…
What are the symptoms of cats exposed to marijuana?
The symptoms are most commonly the same sort you might observe in humans:
* Lethargy
* Uncoordinated, Falling over
* Depression, Sometimes Alternating with Agitation or Anxiety
* Vomiting
* Bradycardia (Slow Heart Rate)
* Seizures, Sometimes Coma

cathywMemberPoor dog.
August 16, 2009 at 8:13 pm #674875
TammiWSMemberUnbelieveable.
August 16, 2009 at 8:18 pm #674876
JiggersMemberI see homeless people on the streets who own a dog and wonder what the hell are you putting that poor animal thru. It’s really sad how homeless dog owners aren’t giving a better life for their pets by living on the streets as well. Their health deteriorates too.

WSBKeymasterAnd to Jiggers’ point … remember the West Seattle Food Bank needs pet-food donations. Collection’s under way till 3 today at West Seattle Thriftway during the CityDog Magazine Cover Dog Search. You can also take it to the food bank.

HunterGParticipantThere were a lot of things wrong with Hempfest this year.
Although I firmly believe in the Founder’s vision of legal marijuana, and a hemp industry – the festival has become so bogged down with individuals wanting to partake of the novelty that it has nearly ruined the festival.
My husband and I were caught in a near stampede situation yesterday while trying to exit it was so overpopulated. What is worse, police did nothing to help control the flow of foot traffic. It makes you wonder…were they hoping something would happen so there could be justification in shutting down the festival?
Hempfest could be a great festival if it had a venue that could handle the increase in attendance.
And yes, this pictured guy is an asshole.

KenParticipantAugust 17, 2009 at 3:11 pm #674880
austinMemberNot really. Cats, at least my adult cats, choose to partake in catnip because they enjoy it. I’ve made it available to them but don’t force it on them, and they seek it out when they want a buzz. Kind of like, I can go to the brewery because it’s down there but no one’s shoving the beer bong tube down my throat.
On the other hand, if* I hold my cat down / wrap her in a towel / grab her by the cheeks, and blow dope smoke in her face, she’ll do everything she can to get away from the smoke. She doesn’t want the nasty burning ash in her lungs and she doesn’t want to get pot-high. *And of course, since I’m not a sadistic moron I don’t do that. That’s the difference in logic. The animal wants the nip leaf, the animal does not want the dope smoke.
And anyone who has ever observed cats on catnip and people on cannabis can tell you that they don’t have the same effects as one another. Cannabis and hops are much more closely related than cannabis and catnip; catnip is a mint. Though this thread has nothing to do with ridiculous comparisons between distant relatives and more to do with treating animals appropriately.

bluebirdMemberGood one Ken!
“Catnip is a perennial herb. It is a member of the Mint family Labiatae, it is also a distant relation of marijuana. It is well known for it’s ability to get cat’s high.”
“Nepetalactone (active ingredient in catnip) causes a hallucinogenic effect. Some say the effects are similar to LSD, others say similar to marijuana.”

cathywMemberMaybe the photo should go up on the dog owner’s wall of shame.

KenParticipantPot is only dangerous to dogs if they eat it. Dogs will happily eat several hundred compounds that will kill them or make them sick. Dogs will also try and eat anything they see going into your mouth even if it is plastic, glass or metal.
Dogs are really not controlled by their brains when food issues are invoked.
Cats usually will not seek out known non food items but there are several examples of household chemicals that use Ethylene Glycol that taste attractive to pets.

Dogs are more likely to mimic goofy behavior in their owners just being around them rather than from secondhand smoke.
The only study I have found involved 4 huge 3 gram “cigarettes” per day of either tobacco and pot, forced mechanically via trach tube, for 900 days (2 1/2 years) which still did not harm the poor dogs. The autopsy at the end of the study is what killed them.

This seems to also be the source of the myth that smoking both tobacco and marijuana together can harm you.
If you can smoke four 3 gram joints a day, I suspect the sheer overwhelming stupids or crossing the street, will kill you long before you get lung disease.
August 17, 2009 at 4:24 pm #674884
austinMemberYou think that it’s a myth that smoking is harmful?
August 17, 2009 at 7:29 pm #674885
KenParticipantSmoking tobacco will kill ya for various reasons. Concentrated nicotine is poisonous in rather small amounts.
The active ingredients in pot are not known to be poisonous in any amount up to 2 ounces tincture direct to the bloodstream of experimental animals. No one could figure out how to inject larger doses at the time experiments were still going on.
The combination danger was only supported by the bizarre experiment linked in the above post. I am all for resumed actual scientific research on the subject but repeating the same tired old reefer madness crap gets old.
Burning any plant material is going to give you carcingenic compounds in various quantities.
Pot smoking is self limiting in dosage. Modern cultivars are so powerful that a couple of puffs will convince you that you have had enough and after a couple more you can’t find your lighter with it in your hand or a couple more you can’t find your butt with both hands and a flashlight.
:)

JohnsonMemberOnly in Seattle, people willing to lynch a person over a couple of puffs.
Of course, this is the town with pet masseuses on call, riding around in their special cars, to meet appointments to massage de widdle aminals.
Seattle, where animals are far more important than people, dontcha know
