CaitParticipantI don’t mean to be paranoid after all the power outages today but did anyone else just hear that HUGE explosion audible from North Delridge? I’ve lived here a while and I know we’re right by the steel mill, but it didn’t sound like anything I’ve heard before…

JanSParticipantmaybe someone started the party a day early?

newcarissaParticipantYes, I heard it too (4700 block of 26th), and I also thought it sounded unusual. It didn’t sound like a random gunshot or big firecracker. It was almost metallic. Most importantly, there wasn’t the sound of a car speeding away or medic units arriving shortly afterward.

wakefloodParticipantIt might have been the steel mill? If they zap the crucible and any water is hanging in the scrap metal, it makes a hellacious boom. Almost knocked me out of bed one night years ago.
Or maybe it was a couple of rail cars banging down in the rail yard??

CaitParticipantOh, it could very well have been the steel plant now that you mention it – sounds like something that might not have happened since we moved in. It shook the house! Luckily I wasn’t asleep yet or I would have been one grumpy woman waking up to that at midnight!

mark47nParticipantI work at Nucor. I didn’t hear of any large explosions due to wet scrap. Usually, noteworthy ones other shifts find out about as they lead to damaged equipment, scrap flung far and wide across the melt shop. Etc. Since the roof was built over the scrap yard, and it’s not been particularly wet, the scrap has been pretty dry. Sometimes a sealed container, such as a propane bottle or driveshaft, will sneak by, but that’s pretty rare as the scrap gets screened several times before going into the furnace.

wakefloodParticipantThanks for the info, mark47n! Sounds like maybe something in the rail yard or maybe an accident nearby was the more likely culprit?

newcarissaParticipantI’ve heard things from Nucor before, and I hear things in the rail yards all the time. I heard that boat blow up in the marina under the WS Bridge a few years ago. This totally wasn’t any of those sounds. This was a sharp bang, not the rumbly echo you hear with most of those things. I suppose it could have been a car crash, but nothing is showing on any of the 911 logs/maps at that time of night. So it’ll remain a mystery…albeit a mystery that’s left me very tired today.
