What is with all of the old couches being left on the side of the road (especially on Oregon)? I can’t believe this is legal just because someone writes “Free” on a piece of cardboard. One couch has been sitting there for weeks and now it appears to have attracted other couches! Way to junk up West Seattle!

Couldn’t agree more – people are too cheap (lazy) to dispose of their unwanted stuff properly so they haul them out to the curb – or drive outside of thir ‘hood and drop off near a bus stop with a free sign on the crap. Yeah I want a “free” couch that has been moldering in the elements for a week or so. If the stuff is in good enough condition why not just arrange for pick-up by Community Services or some other local non-profit that will accept the donations?????? Most “free” curb stuff is just trash improperly disposed of IMHO.

Maybe by having a couple couches hanging out together they’ll fall in love and the owners are hoping they’ll get a free love seat as a result. Works with dogs. . . (no dogs were harmed in this post and I am not promoting irresponsible breeding or offleash walking or playing at the beach).

I saw a couch on the side of the road at Florida and 13th on Harbor Island, it is most likely free if anyone wants to pick it up.

SW Florida St is one of those “How well do you really know West Seattle” streets. Bonus points also awarded for SW Prescott Pl, Cottage Pl SW, SW Tillman St and Forest Ct SW.

I agree that they’re an eyesore, but as a nonprofit employee, I have to add: we don’t want them either! Please do not “donate” your coach at a donation bin, and in all likelihood, if you call and ask to have it picked up, the answer will be “no.”

    They go to the dump!

Monosyllabic Girl – Don’t forget SW Niesz Court! That’s the street I grew up on, and no one ever knows where it is.

This site has info on how to report illegally dumped items:

quesera – I agree. If Sharehouse, NW Center, or Goodwill doesn’t want it then no one does!

    Thanks for the tip Elizabeth!

I filled out the illegal dumping form for a sofa left on our corner about 2 weeks ago – I think it took from Thursday to Tuesday to pick up, but they did take it away. I’m glad it’s finally gone because on the Sunday night that it was there, some drunk kids across the street decided to have a party on it and started moving it around – I was watching to make sure it didn’t end up in the middle of Fauntleroy. It didn’t, but by Monday morning the cushions were gone.

My feeling is you get a couple of days to put whatever you want out there. After that you have to dispose of it somehow. I have put some crazy stuff on the curb and people seem to find some use for it. Better than ending up in a landfill. I’ve got a toilet in front of my house righ now but it’s coming in tomorrow.

That is what a reasonable person would do. Sadly, some people tend to view it as a dumping opportunity.

Craigslist! Another mans trash is another mans treasure…or maybe in this case a great “crashing in the basement” couch.

I have had various things in the past that I think probably need to be hauled to the dump…but I always just try them on Craigslist Free section first … and in 90 percent of the cases, someone wants it.

They are happy to get something free and I am happy not to contribute to the landfills.

On the lighter side: though you have to give this video about 40 sec to get to the .. well .. curb-side chair rather than a couch, the discussion reminded me of this commercial.
