I just got my bill for $187.00 for phone, cable, internet. Even if I drop my phone (land line I don’t need) it would only decrease by a couple dollars? What are my options?

I have Century Link. I currently pay about $29 for a basic land line and a promo rate of $20 for internet. So my total bill is about $49/mo but I don’t have cable.

And when the promo ends I have to call and get another promo or quit or whatever.

Full disclosure – it took me about 6 phone calls and 4 hours to get the rates I was promised when I signed up. I think Century Link’s business model is to charge way more than the agreed rate and hope people get tired of fighting and just give up.

It’s not like Comcast is any better. I spent 30 minutes with a rep trying to figure out how to ratchet down my monthly pound of flesh for cable/internet and finally succumbed to something I didn’t like but sounded like the best I could do.

Long story short, the rate didn’t get changed for some reason even though the tv packages I dropped were gone within – and I mean this literally – those channels were gone in minutes from my phone call.

So of course, I had to get back on and get a credit and yada frickin’ yada…

Thankfully, Comcast has bought the FCC so that they can finally tighten up their monopolistic pricing power and charge me whatever their quarterly earnings need to be to buy their Sr. Mgmnt new winter homes in Chamonix. Aspen is so last year.

A few years ago I got tired of calling to say $160+ was too much and how can we lessen it so I took drastic action: No landline, basic cable package and high speed internet. It was $60. I quickly learned I can’t live without a DVR so I bought a TiVo. I am paying Tivo $15 /mo. and I’m now paying Comcast $85 / mo. for internet, cablecard and basic service.

My comcast bill is $75, 50mbps blast Internet only.

They are advertising a package for $69.95 limited basic (ch 2-29 no HD) and standard Internet (30 Mbps?). If you dump your TV for 6 months you’ll get tons of offers for double play. This package is to lure people in for 2 years with free HBO.

Dump the telephone, buy your own modem/router, and reduce to limited basic TV or get a $40 amplified flat antenna from Costco (HD free).

CenturyLink is not even a consideration in High Point at 1.5mbps. It’s very dependent on where you live. I could never use VPN to work from home on that. My cell phone gets faster speed on LTE!

Tricky, I live in HP too and Century Link sells a 12 or 13 mbps speed – at least on my street. I run a speed test from time to time and we are getting the full advertised speed or very close to it. YMMV.

Last time I called it was less than 5mbps on my street. 12-13 is still only marginally better than the 9 down 7up my phone gets with LTE. Definitely not usable for using VPN from home.

It really comes down to the speed you require. DSL, etc really can’t hold a candle to Cable if you need to upload & download large files frequently but can suffice if all you need is to check email occasionally and watch Netflix. Unfortunately, Comcast owns the market out here when it comes to speed until someone brings us FIOS.
