hollyplaceParticipantI love the news story tonight about the cash mob in Bremerton. I feel like we need a cash mob West Seattle group. Everytime I see a groupon or a similar discount for a local restaurant or business I like, I try to go there and pay full price. I assume that when they are offering that kind of a deal, they are hurting for cash/business. I was in a local pizza restaurant last month when a Dealpop coupon was about to expire. The restaurant was packed – good, but not much profit for a lot of work.

JanSParticipanthollyplace…Bloomspot (like Groupon)just had an offer for Canlis (it was expensive – hehehe)…pretty sure they’re not hurting – lol..then again, maybe, in this economy, they are, considering what they charge…

WSBKeymasterGr*upons and other “daily deals” hurt, not help, local businesses, most of the time, plus suck money out of the local economy and send it straight to out-of-town pockets. Luckily the “deal” industry is being seen for what it is …
http://www.powerretail.com.au/news/groupon-under-investigation/
There was a time a year or so ago that my field, online-only neighborhood news, was being hounded to go into the daily-deal business. Traditional advertising is dead, all of us who do this in hundreds of cities nationwide were told. Get on board with “daily deals” or die. Our phone rang a couple times a week with somebody who wanted us to partner with their “white label” deal “service.” Road to riches, they insisted.
Patrick and I are rather curmudgeonly independent. We said, no, we don’t think the deal where the coupon provider and site owner take most of the purchase price is a good deal for a business owner. Count us out. We believe in selling brand-awareness display advertising that exposes businesses to possible customers day in and day out for a low price, NOT picking their pockets for one e-mail blast.
Your loss, said the ENDLESS stream of bandwagoneers. Now, a year later, most of the daily “deals” are closer to the one I saw from a local corporate media outlet this week – half off your medical marijuana card!!!!! – and then we see cases like two local businesses that recently closed, having daily deals STILL turning up days/weeks later … we were right. Clearly. Anyway, I digress. To the cash mob note:
We’ve heard of these “cash mobs.” Not sure if the work has led to a payoff. There was one in Burien a couple weekends ago, lots of advance publicity and heavy breathing, and something like 40 people showed up. To benefit one business. (How do you choose which business?)
Don’t wait for something special. Make every day a local-business cash mob. If you can buy it in a local independent business, please do. Not only will it keep them afloat, it also means things could snowball and we could get MORE local independent businesses, making the peninsula ever more self-sufficient. We are trying to live this ourselves, even though it may mean a few extra bucks spent … for example, last computer we had to buy, instead of going to a website, we went to the local dealer.
Watch for special opportunities to cash-mob your favorite local businesses, too. The Junction has some of its special seasonal sale days coming up. And in multiple neighborhoods, it’s Art Walk night one week from tonight … a great chance to explore various businesses.
I know lots of WSB Forum members are avid small-business supporters, so I’m preaching to the choir. Getting back to work now… TR

WSBKeymaster… and that said, somebody has gone and organized one. Not related, apparently, to the Facebook page about which someone posted separately here in the forum a few days ago. https://westseattleblog.com/?p=105566

transplantellaParticipantCashmobbing needs to take place somewhere I can get to on the bus. Or I can’t come.
I’m not walking half a mile with 40lbs of plants in tow, from the back side of White Center where no bus runs.

trueblueMemberI just saw in the Forum that Furry Faces is looking for donations for an upcoming plant sale, so what a great way to get more bang for your buck than to buy some plants at the Village Nursery and then donate some or all of them to Furry Faces to help raise funds for their great cause. I thought the “cash mob” to benefit the Village Nursery was a great idea, but this way it goes twice as far. And, I can drop them off at Hotwire Coffeehouse on the way home.

2krazy4wordsParticipantAnother way to SUPPORT LOCAL is the April 22nd Auction/Fundraiser for Friends of the Animals Foundation (FAF) at the Rocksport Bar and Grill
FAF is a West Seattle based, 100% volunteer, rescue organization. They count on your support to do what they do. http://www.fafseattle.org
ROCKSPORT is a local fixture! This auction is going to be AMAZING … and you’ll probably work up a hearty appetite, so it’s a good thing it’s at a place with delicious food.
The Auction items are also a sampling of LOCAL Businesses. You can check out a “sampling” of what will be there (and a list of donors to get an idea) …

Mark your calendars for April 22, and come on out and SUPPORT LOCAL!

luckymom30ParticipantSpeaking for just our family, but many times e have purchased Groupons, and other such local deals to restaurants and other businesses we did not know were in West Seattle. For us purchasing the deals has has us spending more of our money locally, and we are more apt to continue our business at local bussinesses because the great deal we received. And especially in this economy getting a deal is much appreciated.

Ms. SparklesParticipantI’m a slow adopter, so I’m only vaguely aware of gr*upons and have never used one BUT I do know that last month when I planned to take my girls to the Seattle Aquarium they were having some kind of gr*upon deal (there was a specific line for such holders) and the turnout was so large that it made the line long enough for me to reconsider; I ended up taking my girls and thus my money to the Children’s Museum insted.

furryfacesParticipantVera is a wonderful, community focused person and has been a supporter of Furry Faces for years. We adore her and are so pleased that she will be ‘cash mobbed!’
@trueblue, thank you for thinking of donating plants to Furry Faces’s plant sale. People’s plant donations from their yards, or now a ‘cash mob’ are what make our plant sale so successful every year!
