I’ve been seeing numerous cars for sale parked along the Admiral hill. I would like to sell my 1999 Saab and am thinking of putting my car there, but is that legal?

i am pretty sure i read in the paper once that it is legal for a private party to place a for sale sign on a car on the street. however licensed dealers may not do so.

good luck if you decide to do it. it seems to me like you see a car every day for about a week or two and then its gone, maybe cause it sold, or maybe the person gave up? can’t hurt to try.

I’ve sold two cars very quickly by parking them there. I’m pretty sure it’s legal as long as you don’t leave them there over the allowed time. I moved mine home every night.

A friend of mine put a car on Admiral recently, only to have the catalytic converter stolen.

Technically you can be written a parking ticket for it. http://www.mrsc.org/mc/wac/WAC%20308%20%20TITLE/WAC%20308%20-330%20%20CHAPTER/WAC%20308%20-330%20-436.htm

In reality I’m guessing SPD or the Parking Enforcement Officers have rarely if ever written a ticket for it.

I’ve wondered about these informal lots. There is one on Henderson at Westwood Village. When there was some controversy re: the safety of the crossing there, the cars at some point started parking a couple of blocks away. I wonder if they were ticketed?

But, how does a statute for “highways” get used for city streets? I’m probably missing something obvious there. Anyway, I’ve heard of folks who have effectively sold their cars there.

wsdood, because the definition of “highway” for traffic enforcement purposes means all public roadways.

Actually, I’m really mad they did away with the cars for sale area in front of Westwood Village – we sold 2 cars there in a matter of hours because of the clear public exposure.

If people on Admiral have had good luck, then I say go for it. I doubt the police will bother you unless you leave it for days. When we put our cars at Westwood – we went and got them every night and or left them overnight on a weekend and then picked them up.

Thanks, everyone, for your advice and feedback. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Hey, at least this informal “car lot” is more honest than – ahem – a certain former West Seattle dealership.

And i will have to rethink this as we are going to be selling a pickup..

it’s too easy to steal the cat converter…

but maybe the informal lot near westwood… easier to bring it home every night.

Am I the only one who thinks it detracts from the neighborhood to enter WS and see a line of mostly crappy vehicles for sale parked on the side of the road? What happened to posting your car in the for sale section of Craigs List, local news website, etc?

Jeannie, Maybe you could put it up on blocks with a blue tarp on it to really make a real marketing statement..

    I’m with you bangles.

First of all, my vehicles weren’t crappy looking. Second of all, I’m selling directly to my neighbors by putting it on the side of the street and 3) CL & autotrader are ineffective tools because pictures aren’t as good to look at as the real thing and CL people don’t show up, etc….

Putting it on the street is not an eyesore if your are responsible about moving it, etc…… It has worked so well for me that it will be the only way I sell a vehicle in the future.

And how is it that cars parked on the street across from a commercial shopping center make the neighborhood look any worse than the shopping center itself?

Well, as a matter of fact, I have tried craigslist, etc. No need to state the obvious, Bangle. In this economy, it’s hard to sell a car, even for around $2,000. And I don’t like having to pay insurance for two cars when I use only one. The car that I want to sell is not crappy-looking in the least, by the way. I agree with mellaw6565.

Don’t take this personally. I’m not saying your car is necessarily crappy, but you gotta admit, there have been some pretty ratty cars, campers, etc that are left there for a while. My point was only that this is a lot of people’s first impression of our neighborhood. They are on the way to the observation point, etc. I just wish there was a better option, that’s all. No offense was intended. To the comment about the shopping center area, the expectation is different than if its a commercial area. Just my opinion. Good luck selling your car.

Don’t take this the wrong way but don’t you all think there are better uses for public right of way than to keep them vacant for the once every six years or so that you need to sell a car?

Eliminating the “car farmers” on Barton at Westwood was a no brainer. Eliminating the car farmers on Admiral will be coming up later this summer.

    Hi Jeannie,

I’m in the market for a used car around the $2k price range… if it runs well and doesn’t need any work done, please email me with the mileage at dohertym@gmail.com. Perhaps you won’t need to park it on Admiral after all! :)

RarelyEver, just so you know, this thread was started over a year ago. So, it’s likely that Jeannie has sold her car (but, you never know! ;-) )

The thread was resurrected earlier today by a Spammer, (not commenter “on board”) and the Spam posting was reported and deleted.

Good luck in getting a car, and if you are interested in a Saab specifically, in my unexpert opinion, they are nice cars. I parked Saabs, amongst others, on a regular basis in my early years working in the parking business in the mid-’80’s, and always enjoyed driving them (in first gear and reverse ;-) ).
