ZenguyParticipantStarting a new thread to make sure eveyone knows of the location change.
Monday 11/24, 7:00 at the WestWood Village Barnes and Noble. Tully’s on Alki is only open til 8:00 and that does not leave much time to decide on a book.
I will bring some book club recomendations and my laptop to look anything up we need.

JoBParticipantNovember 20, 2008 at 3:32 am #647701
addParticipantI will be there. Zenguy – I sent you a PM.
November 20, 2008 at 3:41 am #647702
WSBKeymasterwhile you guys are at Barnes and Noble – look for info on some upcoming book fairs to raise money for local groups. I will add to this thread when I dig it up later. I know of at least two – one involving West Seattle HS kids – these usually mean that you pay the same cost for a book but part of the purchase goes to a good cause.

celeste17ParticipantI will try to make it but will be late as I have to take my Mom to her knitting class that she teaches at the Starbucks in the Morgan Street Junction. Her class starts at 7 and I like to make sure she is settled before I leave.
November 21, 2008 at 4:20 am #647704
ZenguyParticipantWe will be at least an hour or more, so feel free to join us. I will make sure to post what we pick so others can join as well.
November 21, 2008 at 7:18 pm #647705
andreaParticipantI will do my best to be there as well, but it will be closer to 7:30pm as I am in the gym until 7pm…looking forward to it!
November 21, 2008 at 10:11 pm #647706
JoBParticipantZenguy…
i will try to be there at 7 so you know you aren’t alone… but maybe we should bump this to 7:30..
November 22, 2008 at 12:16 am #647707
ZenguyParticipantI am sure people will be late and it will not really start at 7:00. I will have a sign that says WSB as well.
I am leaning towards a book that has a social commentary bent to it, something like To Kill a Mocking Bird (embarrasingly I have not read it) or The Secret Life of Bees. I think they would make for some great conversations too.
November 22, 2008 at 12:49 am #647708
addParticipantI read and LOVED The Secret Life of Bees – it was one of those books I gave as gifts for about a year after I read it. Now I want to see the movie (I love Queen Latifah).
You know, I don’t think I’ve ever read To Kill a Mockingbird either. It’s one of those books that you know so much about, it’s hard to remember if you’ve actually read it or not! I like the idea of picking an old classic, though….
November 22, 2008 at 1:28 am #647709
andreaParticipantI loved To Kill a Mockingbird and would be willing to read it again, and haven’t read the Secret Life of Bees, but I hear its a great book.
If we’re looking for social commentary what about Animal Farm (read it as a high schooler and I didn’t really understood it at that age!), the Grapes of Wrath, or Things Fall Apart? Or we could just take one of those “100 Greatest Books” lists and pick from there each week/month?
November 22, 2008 at 4:23 pm #647710
TammiWSMemberSadly, I bought many of the ‘greatest books’ and they still are on my shelf unread — so I would LOVE to try To Kill a Mockingbird or Grapes of Wrath.
November 24, 2008 at 2:32 am #647711
AnnieParticipantI’ll be there. Thanks for thinking about a sign – will this be in the cafe area?
As for books, are we starting with novels? Considering only novels? Or will that be part of what we’ll discuss. As for current events/activist books, lots of people like Three Cups of Tea. I tend to read books and pass them on, which I did with Secret Life of Bees, Middlesex, and Three Cups of Tea. Wish I remembered who I passed them to.
See you tomorrow night.
November 24, 2008 at 2:37 am #647712
ZenguyParticipantIt is open to anything and I figured we would decide tomorrow night. I have ten pages left of Middlesex…awesome.
November 24, 2008 at 4:09 am #647713
addParticipantLooking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night! I can tell it will be a good group – all the books mentioned so far I have either read & loved, or wanted to read – so that’s a good sign! Thanks, Zenguy, for keeping it going!
November 24, 2008 at 4:10 am #647714
addParticipantPS, Zenguy – how could you ever have 10 pages left in a book and then go mosey off to work on your computer??!!
November 24, 2008 at 6:10 pm #647715
ZenguyParticipantI read my books on the bus, a good use of time.
November 25, 2008 at 1:11 am #647716
addParticipantNovember 25, 2008 at 5:10 am #647717
ZenguyParticipantThere were six of us in the Cafe at Barnes and Noble.
There was lots of lively debate about books and many other topics as well.
We finally decided on Diane Ackerman’s The Zookeeper’s Wife. A story about saving Polish Jews by hiding them in a bombed out zoo.
Here is the Amazon listing.
We will be meeting again on 12/08, 7:00 at Barnes and Noble again.
November 25, 2008 at 5:32 am #647718
JoBParticipantit was a good group and lively discussion.
thanks zenguy for being our public voice and for hanging in there and keeping us on track.
I think this is going to be a great group.
November 25, 2008 at 5:40 pm #647719
addParticipantYes – fun group! Anyone is welcome to join us at the next one, so don’t be shy. I’m looking forward to digging into “The Zookeeper’s Wife”.
November 25, 2008 at 5:46 pm #647720
BayouMemberI’m in the middle of another read right now but I’ll certainly be checking back to see what the next selection is. Zenguy, thanks for getting this started!
