oh cheesus. Keb wants to be in 98103 anyway, I hope s/he can find happiness there :-) or somewhere in this world. I only see a couple posts that could, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered even a bit snarky. You don’t get to define the type of responses you get when you post to a forum. Also, the concept that the posts of a dozen strangers within a peninsula with a population of some 80,000 could impact someone’s opinion of their own life choices is….. laughable, to put it kindly.

Looks like someone only wanted someone to agree with them. Any other discussion is unwanted. We gladly welcome you to move out of West Seattle. Thanks anyway!

I guess you can blame me for my post, I just thought this sentence:

“Supporters: please email me. Haters: don’t bother as I will simply send you to junk.”

deserved to be called out. My thought was why post if you don’t want an open discussion.

Another thought came to me maybe this was an old poster with a new name and just wanted reaction.

The OP was not asking for an open discussion. Keb wanted like minded people who wanted to change things, not argue about why change was not warranted.

I agree the way it was phrased (junk) was antagonistic, but given this board’s predilection for canine support it was warranted.

Folks did pretty quickly dismiss as “normal” what to the OP could be a very serious problem. That’s not mean but not neighborly either. Perhaps more people in this virtual community should stick to the old adage “if you don’t have something nice (i.e. constructive) to say, go on to some other topic.”

keb98103 could have helped his/her cause by including the email address for requested feedback and then ignoring the thread just as s/he intended to ignore the *haters’* emails. Some people are more sensitive to stimuli than others and I’m sure the barking really does bother keb. On the other hand, I don’t think any of the posts were cruel or repulsive, and most included commiseration and/or constructive suggestions. I can’t imagine what more s/he expected.

If only the internet worked that way… :-)

I’m not sure what about suggesting the inclusion of an email address if one wants email replies is mean or repulsive, but oh well.

    keb98103 is the hater.

dogs bark. dog’s people know this. we do not want to distress our neighbors. the direct approach for discussion is always the best.

I’ve always heard that trolls don’t like dogs.

Most of the comments were fairly snarky, in a Seattle passive aggressive way, but the OP does seem to have overreacted. It sounds like I have the same thing going on in my neighborhood. I work at home and there are periods of time throughout the day where it sounds like someone is operating a kennel nearby. Either that or a dog fighting ring. What sounds like multiple dogs will go crazy, barking for half and hour or so. Then all is quiet for 30 minutes. And then the barking starts up again. I realize I need to walk over and try to figure out what’s actually going on before doing anything else, but I’m wondering, legally speaking, are prolonged periods of barking dogs during the day just fine. What does it take for something to be a legitimate noise violation? I lived in the heart of capitol Hill for five years, so am used to excessive noise, but these dogs are rather irritating. Thanks.

There is some sort of regulation about nuisance barking–I think someone posted a link. It’s pretty subjective; basically, if someone complains, then it’s a nuisance. I wondered if the OP tried calling Animal Control (or, you know, talking with their neighbors) before posting here, but I suppose we’ll never know.

There are a lot of dogs in my neighborhood, and a person could probably track my running route by the barking since it tends to follow me along my route! But the barking pretty much stops as soon as I move on.

And I think that’s part of the issue here. West Seattle is big. Some neighborhoods have more dogs than others. Some neighborhoods have better behaved dogs than others. And some people are more annoyed by barking than others. Hence a lot of people’s responses, I think–but if asking for more details or suggesting that somebody talk with their neighbors makes someone a hater then oh well.

This thread surprises me on a couple levels. First of all, if keb98103 wanted to find people with similar concerns about dogs off leashes, dogs on beaches, dogs chasing geese, dog poop in garbage cans, people that let dogs go in planting strips, abused dogs, pit bulls getting a bad rap or a myriad of other dog related topics this is absolutely the place to come. For some strange reason concerns about barking are met with the sound of crickets and those concerns appear to be something that most of us just accept (or it’s not that big a problem where we live).

Secondly, I find Keb’s reaction to be a bit over the top. I’ve had people agree with me and disagree with me on this blog and frankly trolls and snarky responses can get my hackles up but I just step away from the computer for a bit and all becomes well in the world. I certainly wouldn’t move because somebody called me in idiot in a forum. . . . . otherwise I’d be living someplace that didn’t have an awesome intersection where you can walk all ways or a rock garden lovingly constructed by a passionate man or a lookout point where the benches mysteriously disappear.

Many posts on WSB forum seem fake. Newly made user, long winded rant then they disappear. Somebody must be reeeaaaaally bored…

Oh 2 Much Wine, the disappearing benches!!!! Please, someone, find that gorgeous, public lookout atop Genessee hill a new bench (and lock it down). I so miss that bench (all of ’em).

So the noob got bent on this thread and I was not even in it yet? Holy chit batman.

In my neighborhood the screaming kids drown out the yapping dogs most of the time and both are set off by the thundering rolling bass speakers.

But that’s how we know it is summer in Seattle since the windows are open.

I have barking dogs and a loud kid. Sometimes my voice gets loud trying to shut them up.

KEB, Have you spoken with your neighbors? Most people are too afraid. I know because my wonderful neighbors called Animal Control. They came by about six months later. My dog barked while they were there too. But the Animal Control person was going to follow up with the complainer. If there is another complaint I believe I get a fine or there is a court date set. If there is a court date set the person filing the complaint has to show up and back up what they complained about. if they don’t the case gets dismissed.

So at some point you have to show the dogs owner who you are. My suggestion is that you get a dog from a shelter and bring home that living creature that will adore you until it goes away to doggy heaven.

My barky dog is quieter since we went and got a second dog. The people I suspect who reported us looked at us in horror but actually my first dog is quieter these days because it has a companion.

If a dog barks in the forum and the OP isn’t there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Please adopt shelter dogs. My daughter and I volunteer at the Kitsap Humane Society (yes, it’s a weekly mini-trip). That shelter really needs volunteer dog-walkers, first of all. Secondly, the dogs are extraordinary! Stuck in those small kennels, coming from who knows what background, they are absolutely gracious and grateful creatures who happily and trustingly trot along with us on the shelter trails. It’s hard to leave them at the end of a day. But we have two rescue barkers of our own.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but any time I get tired of hearing the other barkers in my neighborhood, I remind myself of their wonderfulness.
