cMemberplace on the south side of the West Seattle bridge?
Just wondering how I didn’t notice something so big being built.

elsinorMemberI drive over the bridge every morning. I noticed it maybe a couple of weeks ago. It must have gone in pretty fast. I didn’t notice any construction putting it up. I wonder what they keep in there?

Sky2625MemberFound this:

The group of six smaller cylinder silos to the left now seem to be encased in the white dome.
A poster on a “what’s that hum?” thread a week back seemed to think the white dome is inflatable.
That might explain it’s sudden appearance.

Sky2625MemberOK, after more research, I found this description of the construction process for a cement-storage dome in Portland:
The building process itself is also simple and straightforward. The circular foundation features special anchors around the perimeter that hold the Airform, an inflatable balloon made of single-ply roofing material.
When inflated, the Airform creates the shape of the dome. On its inside, the Airform is sprayed with a polyurethane insulation material in several stages, totaling about 3 in. in thickness. A grid of steel rebar is then placed into the insulation, making the inside of the dome look like a giant birdcage. Finally, the rebar grid is embedded in a 2- to 3-in. layer of Shotcrete. The Airform remains in place to serve as the structure’s waterproof outer shell.

TraciMemberWOW, I thought I was going crazy! I drove by it about a week ago and was like “wait wait, that big huge white dome wasn’t there before? Was it?” and then decided that it couldn’t have gone up that fast and was super confused.

SueParticipantYou know, when I first saw this thread I was thinking “what on earth are these people talking about.” I take this route every day on the bus and never noticed anything. So today I’m looking out the window and there it is. Yeah, that’s *definitely* new. And it does look inflatable – I noticed a place at the bottom that looked “wrinkled” as if it wasn’t fully inflated.

kmMemberMy friend was telling me that his contractor was planning on putting up a massive inflatable dome over his new home construction site so that he could still build during the bad winter weather months. Not sure if that is what this things is, but it sounds like the same situation.
