Thinking about going to a whole house tankless water heater anyone with experience with electric ones?

I have a tankless water heater, but it is gas, not electric.

There is a delay in the water becoming hot – its only really noticeable when running the hot water in the kitchen, which is about 30 feet from the tankless unit. Basically the opposite end of the house from where the unit is located.

I only mention it because even though the old water tank was fairly close to where the tankless unit is now – it didn’t seem to take as long…

For the bathrooms which are within 3 feet of the tankless unit, its not really noticable.

As I understand it, there’s a huge difference between gas and electric for tankless, and nobody I consult seems to recommend electric with the current technology. I’ve heard if you plan to have a tankless system in every room where hot water is needed, it’s doable.

We’re 800 sq ft. and 2 people–not incredibly heavy hot water users (our current tank is actually too big for us), and we can’t find anyone who thinks it would be reasonable for the space we’ll save.

I’m interested to hear if anyone has made it work for electric with a reasonable cost!

We have one in our town house. We loved it and in owning the property for ten years in February the only complaint was from one tenant who couldn’t have a hot enough bath. But she was high needs. I took baths and did dishes with no issue . It was gas.

We have a gas furnace but where I would want the water heater I am not sure I could run the gas line as it is on the other side of the house

We have a gas one. Very reliable. It does take time to get the hot water to the farthest bathroom. Multiple people can use hot water at the same time.

We have gas also. Much more efficient than electric. Running a pipe shouldn’t be too big a deal, but it is dependent on access. Is it through a crawl space, or an open basement? Splitting a line is not a huge undertaking that most plumbers or heating mechanics can manage. Keep in mind you still need an electrical outlet close to a gas tankless heater and a way to vent the exhaust.

When considering venting,be aware that some units can be installed outdoors. Also, there is a specific vent tube that you need with tankless units that is a bit pricey. Be sure to include it in the budget.

    Clark –

I know an electrician who says the electric ones are inherently flawed. The elements burn out quickly. He fixed one for a friend and then two years later she had the same problem.

Also, depending on the age of your house and specifically the wiring, you may have to upgrade that for the electric tankless.

Good luck with whatever you decide..
