With so many people moving into WS I thought to put out a message to see if there are any hockey players reading the blog who may be looking for a team in the new city. YES…there is hockey in Seattle! We have a team and are looking for players for our adult league that plays in Renton. This is “beer league” D level of play (some previous experience is good to have; example: former high school player) with full equipment and fairly competitive. Avg. player age is ~ 40. It’s affordable, centered on the fun aspect and definitely good exercise. The league is non-checking, and open to men and women 21 and over; starts mid-late September. If your interested, reply here or please text Chris at 206-334-0753.

If you can hear them, it might be getting dire. We had a large nest of what appeared to be German wasps in our wall. They got in through a hole in the siding and set up a nice home. We called Wild Bee Company and Keith was great in getting them out.
What happens is they create a hive (in our case, between the studs – about a foot or so long) and as the wasps look for more space, they’ll gnaw on the sheet rock until they break through, and well, there will be problems.
Keith cut through the wall from the inside (the wasp nest will be right against the wall) and vacuumed them out. He then painstakingly removed all evidence of the nest/hive. This is critical, because if any eggs are left, they’ll hatch in the spring and the whole process will start all over again.
Anyway, Wild Bee Company did a great job and I highly recommend giving them a call.

If they’re in the home than that’s a different, more urgent matter. Especially if kids, pets or people with allergic tendencies reside there. They’re likely making their way in via heating duct or holes drilled in walls for cable ran into a room. Some homes even have gaps at the edges of floors/walls, or possibly loosely covered electrical outlets or light switches .

Having managed dozens of rental properties over the past 16 years, some homes as old as the 1940’s, I’ve seen some weird construction techniques and industrious occurrences involving insects.

My thinking is if you can hear them then there must be a large qty, maybe time to get someone who REALLY KNOWS what they’re doing involved.

My first and only call is to Able Pest Control, however fairly recently there was a call-out by someone here on the blog looking for pest control companies and they received many strong endorsement of various companies, definitely worth checking out.

Best of luck Dee…and I would be interested in learning what you learn, as I’m not done learning until I’m done breathing!

    Hi Dee,

If they’re not a immediate threat/problem to humans or pets, I would encourage you to let them be and live-out the rest of their summer. Our environment needs those little critters!

Once the weather turns cold they’ll leave at which time you can seal the area well so they don’t return.

One thing to keep in mind, they are VERY attracted to meats and sweets, so don’t leave any unattended meat (sandwich, BBQ, hotdog or food scrapes etc) out in the open that will draw them. Also, they LOVE sweats, especially soda’s, so if there’s an open can of something sweet they’ll crawl inside to get some. Would hate to take a drink from a can with one of them inside, I now have the habit of always covering my can when I set it down!

In short, give them a place to live and help our community while protecting you and yours. Do not leave and meats or sweets out in the open.

If you feel you need to get rid of them, sorry, I can’t help you there.

    Mahalo…

    Thank you Jan!!!

One item worth noting; during the summer a vast majority of the FIRST STUDENT school buses that transport our Seattle City Schools students were outfitted with exterior cameras to catch those who do run their ‘reds’ and ‘stop paddles’.

6 cameras are activated when the ‘reds’ are engaged by the driver that will photograph any vehicle that passes along the drivers side of the bus, the cameras are designed to take snap-shots of both the front and rear of the vehicle(s) as it passes, so there’s no way to get away with it.

A couple minutes of patience can save you a whole lot of $, and/or some families a whole lot of grief!!

Please be patient, we drivers don’t want to hold-up traffic any longer than we need to, however our priority must, and always will be the safe movement of our the ‘little darlings’ off/on our bus ALL THE WAY to/from the sidewalk and/or away from the dangers of traffic, or until they are ALL completely seated in our “big yellow limo’s”.

The first few days of school will likely result in longer-than-normal stops as parents and drivers workout details. Again, we’re aware of the bind we’re putting on traffic but its a necessity to towards a safe and uneventful school-year of transporting other people’s children.

Something that I sincerely love doing and take very seriously!

I’ve wanted to build a push or bicycle cart shelter for situations like these but haven’t a clue about local ordinances. Maybe we can find a couple of local businesses that wouldn’t mind giving her a safe place to lock it down/park?

Stumbled across THIS and wonder if MT would be interested in it.

Pushcart, lightweight, lockable, shelter from elements, storage, and could be an awesome community project. I love the paint job on the last Sara Cloultier example and think it would brighten both MTs day as well as WS locals.

…only if she is open to the idea.

I am more than willing to dedicate build space, materials and sweat to helping.

ASK: A dear friend of mine sold her large house in days and had to vacate quickly for the new owners. She’s found a temporary place way out of town but would love to find a M-I-L apartment in an older home back here. She’s a special lady. Kind, considerate, cooperative, clean. She’d make a wonderful tenant. I’d love to find her an appreciative West Seattle home again.
